Low milk supply at 6 months?

I've been exclusively breastfeeding for 5 months now. My baby is 6 months. We don't have a feeding schedule. She just drinks whenever she wants really. I started to notice her wanting more milk 2 weeks ago. She wasn't comfort nursing but actually feeding. I thought she was going through a growth spurt but it's been two weeks and it's still the same. She is fussy after feeding and I feel like she is still hungry. She has started solids and seems much happier after eating food. Did anyone randomly have low supply issues at this stage? How did you tackle it?

I think if you’ve been successfully exclusively BF for that long it’s very unlikely your supply has just dried up. My understanding is that by this stage, your body just makes milk on demand when your child needs it. A BF advisor told me that if I didn’t feed for a couple of weeks, then tried again I’d have milk there even after that long break. (My baby was 9m when she said that but I don’t think there’d be much change between 6 and 9m - if anything, you’ll still be making more milk than me as mine is mostly on solids now.) More likely she is fussing cos of teeth? Or just too interested in the world around her?

Agree with the PP. it would be virtually unheard of for you to have issues now. Your milk supply will be very well established.

It could be because you've started solids. These solids probably won't have as many calories as the milk so she will be genuinely hungry.

Try feeding her from both breasts each time and go back to the first one again if she's still hungry and try a few breast compressions to keep her interest Wink

I don't know, I think my milk supply reduced when my baby fully dropped all night feeds (periods came back very shortly after!). Though we did keep up some breastfeeds alongside solids for another two and a half months after that. No more milk-drunk baby, even when due a nap!

Before starting a supplement, which I'm sure would be fine but I've just never heard of it, it "power pumping" I woukd talk to a BFC on one of the Helplines if you're still concerned.

Have you got the numbers @flyingbeet? Wink
