CMPA to formula but not breastmilk??

My LO is almost 6 months. He has been EBF since birth, but last month we started supplementing with formula (normal cows milk formula). Since then, he's broken out into eczema all over his body. Obviously it could be a coincidence, but I can't think of anything else that has changed. Could it be a cows milk allergy/intolerance? He's never reacted to breastmilk and I eat a fair amount of dairy? No other signs of CMPA except for the skin reaction.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 💐

You could try goats milk formula instead, it might be gentler and then change to the cows milk..
It could be a different ingredient in the formula either

Yes it's quite common to only react directly to dairy but be fine with breastmilk. The dairy proteins in your diet are broken down by your body before they pass into the breastmilk and for many babies this is enough for them not to recognise them as dairy.
The first step of hypoallergenic formula is extensively hydrolysed formula which is dairy based but the proteins are broken down.
Speak to your GP about a trial of the formula

I have a CMPA baby and that's pretty common. I actually EBF and he's fine with me having tiny amounts of dairy. We were thinking of topping up with formula but the prescription dairy free formulas are really rank and it's quite hard to get babies to drink them so ultimately I can't be arsed with the faff. Might as well just pump some extra milk. They grow out of it by 12 months usually

It’s common. DS didn’t have formula but the first time I tried him on cheese mixed into mashed potato he reacted. So we stopped any dairy products then introduced them very gradually until his system could cope.
I am not a big fan of milk but love cheese although if I have too much I do start to get the burnt mouth feeling which is a sign of allergy.
DS drank cows milk after 22 months ( when I stopped bf) but has never been a big milk lover. He doesn’t eat yoghurt either. I think that as time goes on you naturally learn which foods cause reactions. I can’t drink orange juice and struggle with fruit, possible fructose intolerance.
Although your DS may eventually be able to tolerate cows milk it may take time. His gut is programmed for human milk protein. Cows milk protein is foreign to him but he will probably learn to digest it as long as you introduce it slowly. I waited until 8 months when he was eating more solids then started adding small amounts of dairy products.

Thank you everyone, some very helpful suggestions. I will make another appointment with the GP, last time they just gave him cream but no interest in getting to the root of the problem. It would be ideal if i could just breastfeed. I put a lot of effort into increasing my supply but nothing worked unfortunately.
