ds starting to fuss and fret while feeding

ds is now 6 weeks old and had been breast feeding well, usually taking both breasts at each feed and spending 20-30 minutes on each. The last 3 days he's suddenly started to cry out, take himself off the nipple and then immediately try and get it back. I've tried winding him but this doesn't seem to be the problem. It happens most but not every feed. Any ideas why? It usually happens after about 10 minutes, although can happen slightly earlier.

Ooooh I had this, it mighht be because the milk is coming out a bit too fast, he could be getting frustrated and pulling off but still hungry. I would keep perservering as it will probably sort itself out. Good luck

Thrush?
It seems he wants to feed but can't for some reason, yes?
DS2 (3 weeks) was like that this weekend, I didn't think anything of it until I started to get REALLY sore nipples, and then pain in my breast, we have thrush.
He was pulling off because it hrut him to feed, can you see any white spots in hsi mouth or a coating on his tongue?

Just wondering....20-30 mins on each side, are you swapping cos you feel empty? He might be frustrated not to be getting the thicker filling up feed and just the fore milk if you are swapping a bit too early?? Just a thought?

Oh yes, could be thrush

Having exactly the same problem with my 5 week old - it's making me crazy! Look forward to hearing any other solutions.

Also to do with timing on each breast, if you don't wait until he has completely finished one side, i.e. pulled off and is actively not feeding anymore, you could cause blocked ducts and/or mastitis which can change the taste of the milk, could be something else worth looking into.

Hmmmm just thinking again....Could also be a growth spurt, they do try and increase supply by feeding more regularly and fussing/crying more. My ds1 didn't do this, but my ds2 who was a much hungrier baby used to fuss and yank at my nipple, bite it and pull it, if he was extra hungry (6 weeks is known as a big growth spurt)

Thanks, I had wondered about your original suggestion snottyshoulders as often when he's feeding he dribbles milk. I have been swapping over due to what I assume is empty breasts. I've tried squeezing/expressing a bit when he does this to see if there's anything left. Ususally I can get a bit to squirt out but I've been told the breast never gets truly empty anyway. If it feels like there's a bit left I'll let him finish on that breast but he carries on fussing .
As for thrush, I have noticed a white covering on his tongue but assumed it was milk residue! I haven't noticed white spots in his mouth but then I haven't looked - I'll take a peek when he wakes up. No sore nipples either (yet). Thanks for the tip.

Good luck!! Well done for keeping at it! You're doing a great job!!

I didn't know they would fuss during a growth spurt. I never had this problem either with ds1, although I did wonder about it being a growth spurt as during the afternoon he gets frantic and my milk supply is really low by that time of day so I have to give him a top up of expressed milk.
