Mums weight loss and breastfeeding

I weigh less now than before I had my DD. Everyone keeps commenting on my weight and I am starting to feel a little bit worried now.

I eat like a horse - so is this normal to get so skinny when breastfeeding?

My DD is 9 months and she has 3 meals a day.

me too
500 extra calories a day needed while bf
and you run around all day, instead of sitting down at a desk - so you basal metabolic rate is higher
its a great diet!
(however if you are worried see your doc rather than believing random person on MN)

Hi tb73

I had the exact same experience. I am now 10lbs lighter than I was before I got pregnant! My dd is 21 weeks old and I'm in the process of changing from bf to ff so will now have to start eating normally again.

You need a lot of extra calories when bf (I think 500-800). Try to eat regularly and well but this is easier said than done. If you feel otherwise unwell check with your GP as I was told that it could be something to do with your thyroid (I've had a lot of people commenting on my weight loss too)

Enjoy eating what you want while you can. For me it was one of the few joys of bf!!

You could ask GP to check your Thyroid level is okay!

I was 1 1/2 stones lighter when I finished bfing at coming up to 16 months than when I started - despite eating 4 times a day and 2 'snacks' (generally a whole pack of bics in the morning - I am a pig) - had to be more restrained pm because of ds1).
Was one of the reasons I wanted to stop. I couldn't take the pace of the day with so little weight on me. It's all coming back on now though!

tb73 · 07/05/2008 20:14

Thanks for that. When friends make comments, I'll be able to tell them it's normal!

You may want to get your thyroid levels checked. It can be quite common for thyroid levels to get all screwed as a result of pregnancy.

I lost 2 stone bfing - despite eating like a pig. All starts to go back at about 16 months sadly.

I did find I was low in iron though - you might want to watch that.

Perfectly normal. Me and my friend agree it's the best diet ever - apart from divorce.

kikid · 09/05/2008 13:25

normal for some i'd say...

I lost weight bf & was back in my normal size clothes 4wks post delivery.

Highlander · 09/05/2008 15:02

perfectly normal! I drop 2 dress sizes at the peak of BFing (5-8 months).

LittleMissMac · 09/05/2008 22:02

Well I'm eating like a horse and slowly gaining weight, in spite of being 8 months into breastfeeding. Some people have all the luck

... though all the biscuits can't help, I suppose!

tb73 · 17/05/2008 20:28

Thanks for all of the comments! DD is nearly 10 months so maybe she will start slowing down now and I won't have to constantly eat!

aagh! why does this never happen to me? I am bf no 2 and not losing any weight - I am eating way less than when i was pregnant and training for a triathlon - i can't lose the last 5 lbs i want to. i am thinking of cutting down feeds (3 a day just now at 10 months old)to 1 or 2 over the next few weeks. I am hoping that when i stop something will magically happen to lose the weight!

tb73 · 19/05/2008 21:07

My sister and a friend of mine both lost their last bit of weight after they finished breastfeeding. I think some women just store a bit - for emergency supplies I guess!
