Alternatives to Perfect prep and our- how to make a formula bottle?

WhiteReindeer · 04/01/2025 11:06

Had to switch to formula with no notice due to CMPA. Have been told not to use the perfect prep. I’m wondering if we could use boiled water for half the amount and then add pre boiled/cooled water for the second half like a hot shot? How long can we keep the boiled water for in the fridge to use?

Have read the baby Brezza doesn’t use hot water and follows European guidelines of not using boiling water which I don’t think I can do

Basically you have to get the powder over 70C to kill any bacteria. You don't have to do the boil and wait method! The way we do it for a 150ml/5 scoop feed

50ml tap water
100ml freshly boiled (basically 100C)

Add scoops, shake, run bottle under tap to cool or stick in a water bath if you've got 15 minutes.

I also cheat and make bottles two at a time, immediately refridgerate, microwave for 45 and shake to eliminate hot spots when ready.

Neither of these methods is the approved NHS method, but the 1/3 - 2/3 method achieves the main goal of getting powder sterile, and then you only have to get the bottle down to a drinkable temp from 70 not 99C.

I used to make 24 hrs worth at a time (up to 5 bottles depending on babies age) make as advised with off the boil water then straight in fridge, microwave and shake/swill to warm when avoiding hot spots - when down to one in fridge make next batch so never have to wait, my second child liked them cold straight from the fridge which made things easier! Never understood the need for perfect prep or the idea of making them one at a time! Fed 2 babies this way from pretty much birth, no issues!

Soonenough · 05/01/2025 15:41

Old school way was to make the days ration at night . Boil water allow to cool somewhat add formula and shake. Cool in a container of cold water then refrigerated. 24 hours is safe . On case of needing an extra , just make one up and put in cold running water .

WhiteReindeer · 07/01/2025 17:44

Thanks, I don’t think I can not use boiled water for all, and use tap water not boiled. Or leave the bottles more than an hour post made up, baby’s had some problems and can’t go against current advise. But have found 50% boiled water to formula and shake and then 50% cooled previously boiled water makes the right temperature and can use within an hour then.

I had huge anxiety and PND, including around bottle feeding, and couldn’t bring myself to use any prep aids. What we did was to make the bottles up fresh, swirl under the cold tap initially, and then plunge into an ice bath - we used a tall, fairly narrow Tupperware which allowed us to fit a bottle, and a big handful of ice cubes. Swirl around for a bit, leave for a few minutes, swirl again. If you baby falls into a feeding rhythm, and you’re on the ball, you can just about pre-empt when you’re going to need to make one (certainly within the permitted hour). If in a rush, split it into two bottles so they cool quicker (but still give as one feed).

I also used to write the time on the bottle with a dry wipe pen, which might be useful if you need to be strict with timings.

Why would you have to switch to formula for cmpa? It's much easier to deal with when breastfeeding since you can actually cut out all dairy.

Formula is made with cows milk. Most cmpa formula babies I know have had a nightmare trying to find a compatible one. Drs wouldn't prescribe a different one without one being used for 6 weeks even when the mum's knew the formulas were causing issues.

WhiteReindeer · 08/01/2025 19:16

@RabbitsEatPancakes i know dairy free breast feeding would be easier. But even those who EBF have to withhold their milk for 3 weeks.unfortunately there are lots of reasons that BF isn’t possible

Have you looked at the nuby Rapidcool. I see this. So easy.

AlienLady · 09/01/2025 02:58

Dr Browns Formula Pitcher. Game changer. Only £20. Make a days batch. Mixed and no bubbles. Pour what you need and no wastage.

converseandjeans · 09/01/2025 06:01

Mine only ever drank room temperature milk. They didn't know any different. Made my life easier.

I used to boil kettle and fill bottles with boiled water & leave to cool & then mix with powder as and when we needed a bottle.

I think under current guidelines I would just use a small amount of boiling water to mix up powder & top up rest with the cooled water.

I have never heard of babies catching anything from powder & cooled water. But I guess there must be some risk for them to change rules.

My issue is we have one and it says can’t put it in the steriliser or dishwasher so Milton is the only option to sterilise it and I don’t want to use Milton.

HV said they were getting lots of babies with gastroenteritis from the powder not being sterilised so have to kill the bacteria in the powder. You don’t know which tin will have it so I guess it’s like weari a seat belt, you don’t always need it/most will be on without it but you need to wear it just in case.

I don’t think I can break from the having to use the formula within one hour of mixing it and leave it all day etc

Sorry I meant I refrigerate straight away. Formula can last upto 24 hours in the fridge.
i was the same until for DS1, he was hospitalised and the nurses made me make a 24 hours batch to keep in their fridge which they used to tube feed him over 2/3 hours.

dmott · 12/01/2025 15:40

I don't know the specifics of what you've been told for your baby.

But what we did was this

Say baby drinks 5 bottles a day I had at least 6 bottles every night I washed and sterilised 5 bottles then added the milk powder to all 5 bottles and then added just finished boiling water to all 5 at the same time. I then flash cooled and put straight to the back of the fridge where they would stay until needed in the next 24 hours. Milk was never kept longer than 24 hours.

We didn't warm milk at all for either child and they had fridge cold milk (some babies won't accept this but many do)

dmott · 12/01/2025 15:41

It's pointless using water that's been boiled then left to cool unless your water company has suggested your water isn't safe to drink. The boiling of water has always been to kill germs in the milk never the water.

Giraffe24 · 12/01/2025 15:42

Could you buy a multi temperature kettle with a 70 degree setting?

Devilsmommy · 12/01/2025 15:45

Get yourself a hot water dispenser with the different temperature changes and that way you can make a perfect 70° bottle no waiting. It changed my life seriously 😊 mines got Cmpa too so i understand

WhiteReindeer · 15/01/2025 17:10

Well we’ve had to change formula to one which has to be prepared with cooled boiled water no more than 30’ so there is no sterilising of the formula! So no idea why this formula is safe to not sterilise and not others!

A lot of dangerous information on this thread.

Make 5 bottles ahead at night, boil water, wait several mins, powder then top up to measure.

Cool bottles is cold water, change water after 5 mins to cool quickly. Store in the fridge for up to 24hrs.

We use to take cold bottle from fridge and put into a bowl of hot water to hear or use a bottle warmer.

Is it Nutramigen? If so it has a probiotic in to help heal the gut - this formula if tolerated gives the best chance of a successful return to cows milk after the milk ladder so I hope it works for you! My son couldn’t tolerate it and we moved onto neocate. Good luck!

Some do tend to have different instructions. You just have to go by the label and you can't go wrong.

Yes it is! He’s doing better on this than Aptamil pepti, but still some issues but would be good if he could stay on this one.
