Weaning from BF to doidy cup? Do I need bottles?

Still exclusively bfing 6mo but having a bad night (got another thread on here about my LO starting biting on my nips ) so thinking I should start working out how I'll stop bfing when I finally do.

DD's been drinking some water from a doidy cup for a couple of weeks but it's pretty messy and I think she sees it as a bit of a game. Is it possible to go straight from breast to doidy cup or should I be giving her milk from a bottle when I stop breastfeeding? Bottles seem like a bit of a step backwards to me since she's getting on ok with the cup. But then the cup doesn't seem to have the comfort factor of a breast or a bottle.

Anyone got any thoughts or experience on this topic?

I wouldn't bother with bottles.

doidy is great and dd has her milk from it no probs when I'm not around to bfeed.

what are these cups please.

justbeme · 02/05/2008 23:23

here

I was wondering the same myself (but more so for when DD is about 1).

I never did bottles with my two DS's. Introduced cup at 6mths with lunch with just water in it but I fed past 12mths and then put the milk in their cup. I was so glad to skip the whole bottle thing ... The biting thing will pass ...

bottles are a waste of time

missbumpy · 03/05/2008 11:11

Thanks. Maybe I'll carry on bfing (as long as she doesn't carry on with the biting thing!) and start introducing some ebm or formula in a doidy cup once a day and see how that goes.
I can't be bothered with bottles. All that sterilising and nipple confusion etc seems like hard work since DD's already quite keen on her sparkly green doidy cup!

I found the doidy cups a bit messy at this stage TBH. DS3 has the Tommee Tipee lidded beakers and he's fine with those - not used bottles at all with him

Caz10 · 03/05/2008 19:42

do you think 4mths is too young for a doidy cup? i'm needing to get dd to take EBM now for my return to work and it's not going well with bottles...

Tommy · 04/05/2008 08:10

I think 4m is a bit young TBH - it woukld get a bit messy. I'm not sure that a nursery or CM would be happy with a cup for that age as they really need guiding with it - at least with the Tommee Tippee they can get on with it themselves. I might be wrong though - I didn't persevere with it

funnypeculiar · 04/05/2008 08:29

ds went straight from breast to bottle from 6 mths onwards - we used lidded cup (avent soft spouted one I think) - he didn't get on with doidy.
Dd went onto bottles & I've had a nightmare getting her off them - defn go straight to cups if you can.

funnypeculiar · 04/05/2008 08:31

fwiw, dd's childminder was happy to try doidy cup for us, but that at that stage dd was refusing to take milk from anything other than me, so I think she was up for anything that might work!

missbumpy · 04/05/2008 17:05

I'd only given DD water in doidy up until this morning. Gave her some EBM in the doidy and she loved it. Drank it all and didn't spill a drop This could be the way forward!

How do you wean onto using a doidy for BM - is there a better time of the day to try it and half BF then when she is not so hungry try the doidy? how have you done it?

Caz10 · 04/05/2008 19:36

yes i would love to know that too! we tried it this am and dd ended up having to get a bath as it went everywhere!

missbumpy do you pour in into her mouth? or let her lap it up? where do you put the rim of the cup? TIA!!!

QueenGina · 04/05/2008 22:42

When I first started doidy, I'd fill with EBM (for taste) diluted with water (for volume as I knew it would probably be spilt and all go to waste).
Sat dd on my knee facing away from me and put between her lips and poured a little into her mouth. Liquid would dribble down her chin, but enough went into her mouth for her to taste it. On our next attempt, she tried licking the rim of the doidy in the same way as she might use her tongue to get milk from the breast. After a few more goes, she finally understood she didn't need her tongue but to open her mouth to drink from doidy.

villbeet · 05/05/2008 21:12

Hi Queen Gina - any particular time to try - morning or afternoon feed - should I bf a little first so she is not so hungry and getting frustrated or if she is bf first will that confuse her more...?

QueenGina · 05/05/2008 21:33

I can't really remember, tbh. I treated it very much as a game rather than a serious means of getting dd to drink at first, so I think we just did it whenever we had a spare moment.
