Does BFing make you windy???

Relatively new here so apologies if the topic has come up before.

And I'm talking about mothers not babies .

My DD2 is 11 weeks and I'm still rather, um, windy following the CS, which I don't remember with DD1, and I wondered if it comes with BFing (DD1 was mix fed).

Please tell me it's not just me. Please.

I'm not admitting anything you understand

but

rest assured CCC it isn't just you

tiktok · 01/05/2008 15:29

Not a known issue, Calm, and I can't understand why making milk in your breasts would result in you retaining excess wind in your gut....there is no direct connection between the digestive plumbing system and the lactation process.

So I think it is just you

Having said that, wind after a CS can last a long time with some mothers, and pelvic floors after pregnancy can be a bit lax, which makes it harder to keep that wind in....

CalmCalmCalm · 01/05/2008 15:41

Thank you Nippersnappers, you've made me feel much better.

Tiktok, I've been around MN for long enough to know of your great wisdom on all things BFing. Which gives me absolutely no solace at all .

Thanks for your speedy responses.

Right, off to do my pelvic floor exercises...

i thought if you have had c-section you dont need to do pelvic exercises oh my i am in trouble.

beansprout · 01/05/2008 17:17

Wind after c-sections is very normal as they have had a good old rummage down there, after all.

I had terrible wind pains the day after ds2 was born, it was worse than the pain from the wound!!

belgo · 01/05/2008 17:18

ruva every woman needs to do pelvic floor exercises every day - however you gave birth! Start today, better late then never!

Wisknit · 01/05/2008 18:15

Pelvic floor is affected by pregnancy not birth so yes you need to do excercises.

Apparently wind after c-section is very common. It's not the BF. Well Done by the way for BF after section. I know a lot of people find it a struggle.

babyOcho · 01/05/2008 18:21

DD is almost 8 weeks and am quite windy... i put it down to my diet of chocolate and fennel tea

CalmCalmCalm · 01/05/2008 19:13

I thought it was the dried apricots I was eating to help my anaemia as I lost quite a bit of blood during the C-section. But I stopped eating them, I've dramatically cut down the chocolate and I just thought that by 11 weeks such effects would have dwindled.

Next question, anyone know how long the wind lasts?

Oh, the joys of motherhood. If anyone had told me 10 years ago that I'd be starting threats on message boards about farting I would've choked on my cocktail.

cockles · 01/05/2008 19:16

Put it this way, I've never been constipated since starting bf. I have however farted for Britain. My pet theory based on no science at all is that it speeds up your metabolism and just moves everything along faster.
I am still farting now 2.5 years later. Don't hold your breath (unless in the same room as me obviously.)

skidoodle · 01/05/2008 19:32

LOL @ cockles

I also had a CS 5 weeks ago and I have been very windy. For a while I was taking Fibogel to counteract the effects of the iron tablets I had to take due to blood loss but that's all over now and the farts keep coming.

I thought I had a good excuse with the BFing, but I'll take tiktok's word for it that it's not the cause.

strawberrycalpol · 02/05/2008 10:17

Oh calm calm calm, bless you for this thread, no not just you - my baby is 5 months and am still farting like a trooper.....

OMG so glad it's not just me! DS 5 weeks old and mixed fed and no CS and I have terrible wind.

CalmCalmCalm · 02/05/2008 11:10

Thank you for the solidarity ladies - I feel much, much better knowing I'm not the only one.

Hmmm. Same here but didn't dare to post. Interesting, Tiktok. So if there is something to it (could be all coincidence I guess), maynbe it's a) changed diet b) reorganisation of guts (had myself VB no CS)???? c) hormones???? I guess Tiktok suggests it's not the hormones, that's what I thought.... But: I still have beautiful skin and hair. Eat lots though, maybe it's just the shear quantity?

QueenGina · 02/05/2008 22:55

As I'm unusually windy when I sit down a lot, I put it down to all the time I sat on my arse while bfeeding. There may be some truth in this as I'm no longer windy now dd only takes 10 mins to feed, 3 times a day.
