Breastfeeding and weight loss

DC3 is 6.5 months. She's been EBF from birth, my other 2 I stopped at around 3 months.

I've found that my body has hung onto body fat up until now. I know it's very metabolism dependant and some women cling onto body fat throughout breastfeeding and others struggle with weight loss being to excessive.

Has anyone had it similar where the tide has just turned and you've gone one way or another? I am asking as I'm not sure if I should perhaps also be querying with a GP for possibly another issue as I seem to be loosing at some rate now. She has recently has a growth spurt and feeds a lot at night so it could just be temporary

i lost the initial baby weight etc after a couple of months but then stayed static until I stopped bf at 17m

I gained weight breastfeeding, I hadn’t eaten for the whole of my pregnancy (HG) I ate everything and gained a stone 😂

Chocolate101 · 15/12/2024 12:24

I’m only four month into breastfeeding but my friend said she didn’t lose anything until around 6 months and then it started coming off x

I lost all my baby weight and more breastfeeding in the first year (I'm still feeding an older child). I think it was a combination of lots of walks with the pram not having time to eat meals, so living of cereal bars etc, and feeding on demand.

However... I'm now back working in an stationary office job, feeding a lot less and very tired so stuffing my face so all the weight has gone back on. So moral of the story there's no guarantees with breastfeeding either way 😂

My weight loss was steady to begin with and then I lost quite a lot at around 6 months. To the point I had people commenting saying I was too skinny but it wasn't intentional. So I fully expect the same to happen again. My second son is coming up to 6 months. I also lost muscle... which didn't help - pancake ass. I didn't like it at all. Had to work hard to build my muscle because my baby sucked the life out of me haha

Thanks for all your responses ladies, very varied as expected!

@acupofteamakeseverythingbetter this is interesting I assumed I'd either be one or the other but we must be quite similar in that respect. Will try and combine with some strength training to avoid muscle loss 🙏

I found half a stone just dropped off both times when my babies got the hang of solids at about nine months and my periods came back. Before that I went gradually down but then just stayed static half a stone above prepregnancy.

Orangebadger · 15/12/2024 16:54

I breastfed for 18 months for one and 3 years another, I put on weight both times and only started loosing when I stopped. My good friend however lost sooooo much weight breastfeeding but then put on a lot after she stopped!

teatoast8 · 15/12/2024 16:55

I lost weight pretty quickly

onthecoastalpath · 15/12/2024 16:56

I bf all 3 of mine for 2+ years and held onto weight the entire time. The month after I stopped, I quickly went down a size.

I was never a skinny bf mother. I was a fat bf mother. I had oversupply. I could have been the wet nurse for the village.

Yeah this I lost loads of weight.

first 3 months was slow to lose the bump. By 6 months you couldn’t tell I’d had a baby and started losing more weight so I was smaller than pre preg. It was a combo of BF and sleeplessness and not eating much and always doing buggy walks and up hills.

by a year I was underweight and actully not happy how skinny I was, no curves. It came back to normal body at 18 months

Elektra1 · 15/12/2024 17:07

I put on weight while BF (3 times) and some of it came off when I stopped. The rest I had to work hard at. BF = easy weight loss is a myth in my experience.

user2848502016 · 15/12/2024 19:09

Didn't work for me unfortunately, EBF initially made me starving and/or crave sugar and carbs then after a couple of months I did lose weight but I think that was more me getting back to a normal diet and walking a lot with the baby. Definitely didn't get any drastic BF weight loss, and I actually have never quite got back to pre pregnancy weight
