If you bfd for more than 2 years, when did you stop and why?

Hi, DD is nearly 2 and I always thought I'd stop bfing when she was 2 but now it comes to it I don't really see any reason to stop (DP is quite keen for me to stop though so I suppose that's a reason though not a very good one...). Just wondering really how often it's the mum who makes the decision and how often the LO - are there some who would just keep bfing forever given the chance? Would love to hear about people's experiences

I have let DS self-wean & he has done so in the last month (he will be 4 in July). I would have been happy to carry on for longer but he seems ready to stop now.

Dd was just over two, and suddenly decided she didn't want to breast-feed anymore. I offered the breast one morning, she said no and asked for a drink in a cup instead. And that was the end of that! She had a few half-hearted sucks over the next couple of days but nothing more than that.

There is no reason for you to stop if you don't want to. Although it has to be said that some children would be happy to carry on ad infinitum - but that's something you can deal with if you get to the point where you want to stop.

We always self-weaned, and the longest was just short of DC4's 4th birthday - DC just lost interest.

DD self weaned. From about 2.5 she only fed every couple of days, and then only for about a minute. We had a chat before her 3rd birthday and I suggested when she was three she might want to stop having mummy milk. that was all, just a very mild suggestion. After her birthday, she started coming to "cuddle her mummy milks" but "I don't drink them any more, I a big girl".

DD2 self-weaned a month shy of her 3rd birthday and we stopped, well because she wanted to - it was a very gradual process and very nice really I was going to stop when she was 2 but during a lovely, snuggly early morning feed I thought "why should I?" and realised that it had nothing to do with anyone but the two of us - not even DH because it had no effect on him at all.
