She is 4.5wks and has vomited after lots of feeds but never yellow the same colour as her bowel movements iyswim.
She has had a blocked nose and chesty cough for the last 2 wks as well, which Iwas led to believe ex bf babies were not susceptible to.

It sounds odd to me. I think you should get this checked out. Do you have a local Childrens Emergency Department you can take her to?

tiktok · 30/04/2008 19:35

tori - this is something to ask the HV or doctor about. It's not the usual colour, and doesn't indicate simple 'overflow'. With such a young baby, and other signs of illness apparent, my personal feeling would be to get medical advice now.

I am not indicating there's anything wrong - it's just unusual for babies' vomit to be this colour, and unusual things in a baby should be checked out.

Thanks tiktok, I did speak to the Dr (who I don't rate) who seemed to think it could be colostrum How likely is this at 5 wks nearly? I did wonder about a partial obstruction but she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and is doing wet and dirty nappies a plenty.

Think you should get her checked over tbh. dd was quite congested as a newborn and had reflux but don't remember her vomit being a yellow colour.

MissingMyHeels · 30/04/2008 19:42

tori - I don't intend to worry you but I would get your DD seen as soon as possible.

My DD (6 weeks) was vomiting yellow and then bright green shortly after birth and had to be taken into SCBU and have various scans etc, she had some sections of dilated bowel and ended up being fine but it is something they took very seriously at the time as can indicate more serious problems.

It's hopefully nothing and don't panic but I would certainly get her checked out ASAP. Hope all is ok

ProfYaffle · 30/04/2008 19:47

Totally agree with others about getting medical advice but, if it's any comfort, my dd2 had a phase of vomiting bright yellow vomit and it was nothing, just normal d&v bug. She was a few weeks older than your lo though. Have you tried nhs direct?

tori32 · 30/04/2008 20:10

not yet rung NHS direct but will do if she does vomit yellow again. I fed her again and although she has vomited again it was phlegm like.

Does she seem unwell?

avenanap · 30/04/2008 20:12

Apart from the cold?

MissingMyHeels · 30/04/2008 20:19

tori, if you have a childrens A&E call them or even call your labour ward. I just checked the booklet I was given when I left SCBU and yellow vomit is a definite get checked out immediately thing.

What colour was phlegm?

tiktok · 30/04/2008 22:09

tori, it is definitely not colostrum....that really is rubbish. How on earth could it be colostrum at 5 weeks? Perhaps you might make a complaint when you have the chance.

My understanding is that obstruction results in green vomit, and with this, the baby is clearly ill, but as we all say, yellow is certainly not normal.

tori32 · 30/04/2008 22:19

sorry its taken so long to post back, I phoned NHS direct and the nurse practitioner is getting a Dr out to me. I just hope its not the one I spoke to at the surgery earlier. LO has been sick 4 times since 7pm and at least half a feed. She has just settled.

PS thanks again tiktok, I'm glad I am not mad thinking that about the colostrum.

avenanap · 30/04/2008 22:24

That's good. They normally won't send a Doctor out unless you beg so they are taking it more seriously then the first doctor. It should be one of the Doctors from the night service so it shouldn't be the same one you saw before. I hope everythings ok. It's better to get these things checked. Yellow vomit is not right.

tori32 · 30/04/2008 22:55

Ok have just been seen by a lovely female on call Dr (not the one I spoke to thank God!) She is fine, looked in every orrifice. Just a bad cold causing the phlegm and stomach ok. The up shot being that the mucus is being swallowed and is refluxing when she coughs (poor thing). She is thankfully now fast asleep

Oh, the only reason the Dr came out was because my other dd 2.3y is in bed and DH was babysitting.

avenanap · 30/04/2008 22:58

That's brilliant. At least you know what's causing it. I hope she's feeling better soon.

tiktok · 30/04/2008 23:41

Phew

tori32 · 30/04/2008 23:47

Oh and thanks for putting me right on bf Tiktok. My 10lb dd2 at birth is now ex bf and has gained 14, 10 and 13oz on the first 3 wks Only 3oz this wk due to vomiting but hey! She is trotting up the 98th centile!!

Can't remember what I said about it to you, tori, but yay

The slowing down in weight gain is expected - no baby's gonna keep up a weight gain like that for long

(Please don't tell me people told you '10 pounds?? You'll never manage to breastfeed her....' )

MissingMyHeels · 01/05/2008 09:38

That's great news tori Glad you're all well.

tori32 · 01/05/2008 18:06

Not health care professionals, more relatives and friends who kept harping on with dd1, so i lost confidence. I didn't dare bf outside my house but now I have even done it in the sgts mess .
