Losing my mind with 14 week old gas

My baby has struggled with gas since birth. He spit up a fair bit when younger, took him to gp who said it was normal. The spit up never really bothered him. From 4am onwards he would be writhing around trying to fart or poo and would only be happy once he did get it all out around 8am.

The last 2 weeks have been a nightmare, everyone said the gas gets better but it's got so much worse. He's now waking up every hour at least trying to pass wind and during the day there is a lot of crying, chewing his hands (which he does when he needs to fart or poo). He'll get a bit of relief if I do bicycle legs etc then it starts again.

He had a tongue tie cut at 4 weeks, he goes to the osteopath, I've given up dairy, soy and eggs since he was 6 weeks. I don't think it's reflux because he's happy on his back on the playmat and in his crib. He falls asleep at the breast and it's often the only thing that comforts him. He sometimes burps himself on the breast but hard to burp him myself now (was easier when he was younger for some reason).

What else can I try or has anyone had this experience? I'm a single parent so these nights and days are really draining me

Have you tried a baby swing?

I used to hold mine under the armpits and let them dangle and then sway them back and forth so that trapped wins was released.

A more modern approach is a baby swing.

The bouncer releases a lot of gas but In about 30 mins it builds up again and it's all through the night. He hates the carrier and the pram too so I'm absolutely stuck in at the moment. Feeling low and like I'm failing him

So the holding up under the armpits trick, it worked for the babies in my family.

Don't bounce or jiggle baby, just sway their lower body back and forth gently.

Baby is looking directly into your face and legs are hanging down to freely kick which also helps!

I can calm him down with holding him or bouncing on the ball, but during the night hes waking up so frequently. I also just tried to take him out in the carrier and he absolutely hyterically screamed I had to turn back. I wonder if the carrier puts pressure on his tummy. But he hates the pram too so im stuck!

Maybe talk to HV or GP they maybe able to advise of something.

Did you find any solutions? Really struggling with this myself atm!

orzo15 · 02/12/2024 18:01

@An89 Actually possibly! I read that he may be having lactose overload, because hes always at the breast and i have a lot of milk and i was switching him too soon between breasts. So i started block feeding, and last night he did a 5 hour stretch! Not sure if it was just a fluke but he has seemed a little happier today.

It is so difficult so i really empathise with you! What have you tried so far?

Thank you, this is helpful.
I am currently combi feeding with kendamil cows milk & breast
How do you block feed with breast? My baby will literally graze on me allll day!

orzo15 · 03/12/2024 19:36

my baby is the same, he could be at my boob all day. I would only feed him from one breast per feeding session, then feed again with thar breast at the next feed, to make sure he is fully draining the breast and getting the fatty milk. When i was switching breasts at the same feed i think he was filling up on watery milk too much and hurting his tummy

How often do you wind him?

For some babies it’s not enough to just wind after every feed - you need to stop mid feed and burp rinse and repeat

Look on YouTube for burping vids too - to make sure you are using the best techniques

orzo15 · 03/12/2024 19:58

The problem is i feed him to sleep so although during the day I can burp him at night he is just impossible to burp when he's asleep

Please help if you have had the same experience.

My baby breastfeeds and either falls asleep on me or pulls away. As soon as I move even an inch he starts to fuss, but won't go back on. If I put him down he screams hysterically as though he in SO much pain and doesn't stop unless he's picked up again.

I know we are having some issues with wind but he's never Been this hysterical at being put down.

I thought reflux? - but he doesn't really spitt back or.vomit.

Could he still.be hungry? Sometimes he will go back on and fall asleep immediately but is he doing this for comfort? - I top up with formula and after this sometimes he will go down.

We took to carrying my youngest everywhere under one arm - like a rugby ball, because the child was like bagpipes - constantly windy and farting and that seemed to help him get it out.

It did improve once he got on solids/was walking around, although I'd still say he's at the fartier end of the children I know!
