6 Month old Suddenly Has Reflux??

My little boy recently had RSV which in turn lead to bronchiolitis so he had a pretty bad cough however things have finally lifted & he’s back to himself however all of a sudden he’s constantly being sick during a night feed?? I can’t work out why - I’ve tried feeding him up right, feeding him lesser amounts more often, all the usual but nothing is working. He’s not holding down a feed much as he’s just constantly coughing to the point he’s gagging and being sick the majority of his feed but ONLY during the night? I read it can be because they’re on their backs for long periods, he never ever ever had this issue before as a little baby.

before he was poorly he would happily take 6/7oz with no issues. He would wake once during the night for a feed, burp, bum changed & back down within 45 minutes. Now this has just taken a total 360 and I don’t know what to do apart from speak to the GP - I don’t understand why it would peak at 6 months?? It’s driving me mad I’m constantly getting broken sleep as it is & this is making life 200x worse 🥺🥺

I can imagine that it's hard to deal withFlowers

Has he had a change in milk? Some people swap to follow on at 6 months. If you've done that I'd swap back to his previous milk.

Nah strangely not. I was going to put him on stage 2 milk but I’m just going to leave him as is. I think his stomach has maybe shrank after being unwell, the possibilities are endless 😂 just another wave to ride! Thanks for replying tho

Reflux peaks between 4 and 9 months usually. Stage one milk is the easiest to digest and there are no benefits to baby from stage two at all. Stage two is just designed to stretch their tummies to give parents more sleep. It's so wrong.

Speak to your GP. It's not uncommon to briefly need some Gaviscon or Omeprazole at this age, which needs to be balanced with the constipation risks/treatment they cause.

Hope baby feels better soon!

I remember that feeling.

Have you tried infacol before the feed?

You mentioned he’s bringing his feed back, is that during the feed or shortly after? If afterwards, it could be because you’ve put him back down to sleep. It’s suggested if you have a reflux baby, to keep them upright for 20 minutes after the feed (I know that’s difficult when you just want to go back to sleep).

I know you must think your baby is big but he’s still very young. Although he’s recovered from his illness, it will take his lungs sometime to fully repair.

I would seek medical advice. Your GP may be able to prescribe something like gaviscon.

Good luck.

Hi all - we had a better day today he took his usual 6/7oz every 4 hours but as the day went on he’s only taken 10oz from 3pm till now… he usually would take 32 - 34oz he’s not on solids yet. Today he’s only had 23 but not been sick. I’ve noticed he’s been pulling at his ears so I’m thinking his teeth maybe bothering him! Still wetting nappies so I’m trying not to worry but I’ll be calling GP on monday

Have you tried him with any pain relief and maybe a teething gel? Flowers

I’ve previously used ashtons and parsons but because he’s been so fragile with being sick I’m scared to use anything in case he brings anything up😥he’s only had 23oz all day

I can understand why you'd be reluctant but maybe try him with some Ibruprofen this morning to too of he is any better after having that? I'd give it after he's had done milk so it's not in an empty stomach.

Have you tried a teething gel like Dentinox too?

Teething and illness both make my daughters reflux worse. It might have been on the edge of reflux and the illness and teething has tipped him over the edge
