Making up formula

So I've been looking at them kettles that boil to the temperature you set it at. And I was thinking I could do it like a hot shot and then add cooled boiled water so the bottle will be the right temperature. The NHS site says water must be at least 70° So if I set the kettle to 80° it should work?

Would this work or a no-go?

Yes, you can make up formula safely like that. I would probably do one third hot water and two thirds cooled boiled water.
For example, for a six oz bottle, two oz hot water and six scoops of formula, shake well then measure out four oz of cold water using another bottle and add to the feed. Don't just top up the feed to six oz as it will be too concentrated.

Ahh that is a good point cause of the formula. Thank you!

Doesn't it ruin the formula if you add it to hot water? OP I bought a kettle on Amazon it's from Germany, I boil the water to 80 then cool it to 40. I can add the link of the kettle if you'd like.

On our formula tins it says to boil a kettle to 100° then wait 30 mins then make up the bottle then cool it which can take ages. So was hoping to skip the waiting times really

No, the NHS guidelines are that the formula should be made with water hotter than 70 degrees, there is a small risk of dangerous bacteria being present in the formula and the hot water effectively sterilises it.

Ok I see so I hope I was doing it right, my DS has had no issues so I guess so 😅

We're using the Nuby Rapid Cool with kettle water. Working great for us and hardly any waiting around.

The way of doing it with 2 oz of boiling water and adding the remainder of cooled booked water is how the prep machine works.
That's what we used for both of our girls, and would do the method you describe while on holiday.

As PP says, make sure your are adding the correct amount of water:formula scoop ratio and not just adding water to that level

PerpetualPeppa · 28/10/2024 09:10

the water needs to be boiling hot to kill bacteria. then cooled to 70 degrees as its best for the formulas nutrients to be mixed at that temperature. if you mix the formula below recommended heat it doesnt mix as well (might not fully disolve). i use a thermometer. i boil the kettle and then add it to the bottle straight away checking on it after 5-10 minutes and when it is between 73 and 70 degrees i add the formula

KittenOnTheTable · 28/10/2024 10:47

I thought that about the boiling water but nhs says its fine as long as its above 70° and I figured the prep machine dosent boil the water either

from what I understand, some of the nutrients can get destroyed if its well above 70 degrees. i think it says that on the packaging of some formula brands

PerpetualPeppa · 28/10/2024 11:14

oh i see what you mean about the initial water, no i've always understood that the water should be boiling, then cooled
