Can I use boiled water and top up with tap water to make bottles?

I fill bottle with 3ozs of boiled water, add formula (to kill bacteria) and then top up with room temperature cool boiled water.

Occasionally I forget to make up spare cool boiled water first thing - could I top up with tap water instead?

LO is 9 months and drinks tap water with her meals.

I'm sure loads of people will come on and say no but I ended up making all our bottles of formula like that- topping up with cold tap water. So did my sis. We have both done it for 2 dc each and they are all fine.

So I s'pose it's up to you!

It's recommended that all water is boiled for under 9 mths. Personally, i wouldn't worry about the drinking water as they are licking the carpet at that age, but with milk, germs breed like billyo, so I'd use cool boiled.

I believe this is super-dangerous - formula contains bacteria which is not killed by the dehydrating process and can cause life-threatening gastro bugs in babies.

hang on, will find a thread with this info.

Slouchy - By using 3ozs of boiled water I am following the guidelines and ensuring bacteria is killed.

Rather than use all boiled and then wait for it to cool down I have followed advice on here to do half and half, I have found that 3ozs of boiled plus 4ozs of room temp water makes it right temp for baby and she can have it staightaway.

If tap water is ok as a drink I can't see why it wouldn't be ok to use to top up bottles??? Am I missing something?

I think the OP is putting the formula in boiling water to kill the bacteria and then topping up with cold water to make it drinkable.

I think it is better to use cooled boiled water but like you, I occasionally fill up from the tap for the first feed of the day (DD also 9 months).

Only for another 3 months anyway!

tap water is ok from 6 months so should be ok especially if you are using the boiled water to mix the formula in the first place.

Slouchy · 24/04/2008 20:02

Oh ok, I dunno. Am a (one-time) bfer anyway so all this bottle stuff just bemuses me. Seemslike you are onto it.

Thanks, launch from one minefield into another! Just stopped bf'ing and onto bottles, trying my best to follow the ever changing guidelines!!

I aksed my HV this very thing last week - DD is 6 months and I'm starting to introduce a bottle. She said tap water is fine from now on as they have their hands into everything and in their mouths anyway..... did the topping up with tap water for DS and he's absolutely fine. I think as long as the initial part is boiling, it's fine
