My Baby wont take a bottle

Can anyone help? I have a 16 week old little girl who won't take any milk from a bottle. I started trying to get her to take a little breat milk from a bottle at about 7 weeks & we've still had no joy. I've tried Advent, Tomee Tipee & Mam bottles but she just wont do it.
I'm happy breast feeding but am getting to the stage when I'd just like to be able to go out for a couple of hours & not worry that she's going to go hungry.
I'd apreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.

Not sure I have any advice but wanted to bump this for you. We had to use a bottle in first few days due to difficulties with bf and in some ways I think that got us over that hurdle and once bf was established we stopped regularly using bottles.

Just keep bumping this until someone comes along, kellymom is a good website for bf maybe they have some advice about bottles too?

Good luck

Thank you - I'll have a look at Kellymom

DD took EBM from an Avent bottle quite happily until about 12 weeks then suddenly refused. After trying several other bottles/teats we finally had some success with the Breastflow bottles but even then she would only take a couple of ounces.

We've since moved on to cup feeding which is far easier. Doidy cups are very good and can be used from 3 months.

Sorry to hijack, but how can baby get a full feed from a doidy? My ds can only sip a little before getting frustrated/bored/tired

mumofmoo · 24/04/2008 21:40

DD has never really had a problem, she sort of laps it up. Perhaps give a little bit every day so he gets used to it?

I'm not saying its a perfect solution but we found it easier than trying to get her to take a bottle she obviously wasn't interested in.

Have you tried a freeflow spout? We took the valve out of the Avent one we had which worked quite well.

Friend had this problem when her DD was 6 months, tried every available bottle/teat on the market here and ended up ording some playtex ones in from the states. After using for a couple of months she then took avent bottles and teats.

I had this with my ds. The trick is to pick one type of teat or cup and stick to it, keep offering it at the same time each day when she is not too hungry, and she will eventually take it. It may take a couple of weeks of persistence however, and you have to try really hard not to communicate any feelings of frustration to your baby. it may also be easier for your dp to do it rather than you, as she can smell your milk and knows there is a better alternative just under your shirt!

I'm having the same problem - we tried to start giving one formula feed a day at night when baby was 3 weeks, almost a week later he will still only take about 30ml, then he rejects the teat and starts wailing and stiffening up his legs. Then end up having to bf him.

Any more tips? Am feeding cow & gate newborn at room temp from an Avent Airflow bottle. Maybe I'm holding it wrong - baby seems to blow loads of bubbles in the bottle?

Sorry to have to add this but my dd is 1 in 2 weeks and I tried every bottle out there also cups etc and she still wont take any.. its me or nothing.

It does get easier when they establish a feeding pattern iykwim and also when they start to take solids.

kstevo · 27/04/2008 08:49

Am also having a similar problem but with one difference, sometime my ds will take bottle of expressed milk no probs for say three nights in a row - as much as 150ml - and then just go off it and take only 10ml for a couple of nights and than he might take it again.
DH tries to perserve with bottle on nights he won't take it - and then I bf - but as a result bed time routine is all over the place depending on when/if bottle is accepted. So sometime ds asleep 7.30, sometimes 9!

Any suggestions?

persistence doesn't always work i am sorry to say, and i am one stubborn person! My dd point blank refused any of our large collection of bottles etc. She just did 'reverse cycling' ie she may take one or two ounces just to take the edge off then has loads from me when i get back. have only had to do this a couple of times but she seemed perfectly happy and settled for naps etc when i was away so can't have been that starving. She is ok now and will take maybe 5 oz max from a cup. I guess it will be more important in the hotter weather that if you are away from baby she will take some fluid. as soremummy said, easyier when on solids as you can add lots of fluid to meals so less of a problem.

I too had this problem and tried every teat on the market. After weeks of persisting we finally managed to get him to take it. The best bottle for us was Dr browns with the straw system. If you are using formula aptimal is the best as its alot sweeter and gentler on their digestive system neither my two were keen on SMA. you need offer it at the same time every day and the most important thing i found was for baby to be relaxed not too tired or hungry. If he was tired or too hungry he just woundnt even bother to try. He will just prob take a little to begin with until he gets familiar with bottle and taste. We also found that the hairdryer helped to relax him whilst first iniating the bottle strange i know.

oops sorry was only meant to say that although dr browns was best he didnt take straight away with it so just persevere. I just found with this bottle ds could control the flow better once he knew how.
