  1. How did you overcome it?
  1. How long did it last?

I was given cracking dark purple bruises/love bites on each nipple from the first feeds, seeing as i didn't have a clue what i was doing and neither did the baby.
These made breastfeeding extremely painful, (made me cry alot)

I used nipple shields to make it slightly more bearable, even though the hospital staff and the HV said not too. Their reasons were that the baby would get too used to the shield and not learn to latch on properly, but this didn't happen and he latched on very well with both the shield and my nipple once it was less painful.

Can't quite remember how long it took to get better, but at least a week or two. It was all good after this.

I did. Even though technically I was doind everything right.

Air exposure is good for them. And also breast milk.

I was using lanosoh cream but apparently I was using way too much - you are only supposed to use a tiny bit, warmed up between your fingers.

Awful, both times. I think I'll always struggle for the first 12 weeks of bfing but it def gets easier after the first 4 weeks..

Try the silverette? I would go for the pads though not the cups as i felt they pressed to hard around my nipple.. Hang on I'll find link..

Congrats on the birth of twins to your sis, mears

Me.

I used something called rotasept (spray) for first 2 babies which was fantastic but not available anymore. For DS#2 I just gritted my teeth waiting for it to get better.

Few weeks.

Actually can't find the pads but here are the cups, on sale too!! www.breastfeedingheaven.co.uk/silverette/prod_2.html

Yes, I did too; overcame it by grinning and bearing it, wandering around topless with nipples slathered in lansinoh and by applying lansinoh liberally before each feed. Still bloody hurt though.

The really bad pain (and a bleeding nipple) lasted about three weeks, but I still had some pain right up until about ten weeks when I got some excellent help with positioning / attachment and it stopped right there and then.

Oh until teeth, but that's a different story!!

Oh, god,, it was excrutiating!
I gave up in the end.
Want to make a success of it next time, with help!
Several of my friends found it stopped suddenly after a few weeks.

It was so painful on one side that I developed a phobia of bf at all and expressed for ages. I think it was the crack in my nipple that hurt the most, I fixed that in the end by using Jelonet all the time so that it could heal from the bottom up. I also got my latch sorted and started feeding lying down, with the help of my brilliant bf counsellor. I am still bf my 16 month old now, so it worked in the end (although I ended up mix feeding .

Best of luck to your sis, and congratulations on the new babies! I wish I had had you around when I was going through this Mears!

me too with both, lasted 5 days. lots of lansinoh and a brace myself, stiff upper nipple attitude, toughed it out. demanded sympathy and got it from dp and dm.

zuzkah · 24/04/2008 11:33

Im sick of being told breastfeeding is not suppose to hurt. It doesn't after about 2 weeks if everything else is right. Although nobody tells you that at the beginning it simply does cos nobody ever sucked on your nipples that hard and that often. However what a pleasure it is now! Thank god!

GreenMonkies · 24/04/2008 14:59

Yes, we overcame it with time and patience. It was caused because DD1 wouldn;t open her mouth wide to latch, but "puckered up" and sucked my nipple in. Lumps of skin fell off in the bath and I wanted to cry each time she started a feed, but after a couple of weeks it stopped hurting.

Then the Thrush started.........
