steak was one of dd's first weaning foods...

Blu · 23/04/2008 16:03

breastmilk never does have much (or any?) iron in it, does it?

Isn't it that the stores of iron your baby would have built up from the placenta will now have run out?

Brangelina · 23/04/2008 16:03

My DD has never eaten red meat or indeed any flesh in her life and [gasp] she is not anaemic.

Oddly enough the iron in bm doesn't suddenly disappear overnight and there are loads of other food sources of iron

Mercy · 23/04/2008 16:05

I thought the same as Blu.

mum2oneloudbaby · 23/04/2008 16:06

Blu I have heard the same as you and in addition have also read in weaning pamphlets from NHS that from 6 months baby maybe given a vitamin supplement.

I read recently that bm has a more easily absorbed form of iron - so quantity is not as important as originally thought.

Breast milk will change to suit the age of the baby, formula doesn't so if a baby is on first formula they may possibly (but not necessarily) need iron supplements if not started to wean which is why often people say that at 6 months babies need more iron because their stores from birth start to deplete so if they aren't getting it elsewhere then it can need to be topped up.

cmotdibbler · 23/04/2008 16:54

Starlight - I thought I'd have a look to see whether the milk hindering vitamin absorption thing was correct - and I can't find any good references that prove it. In fact, mostly I found references to show increased absorption of vitamins when milk was drunk with them.

I thought the interesting thing in the study that I linked to was that the babies were obviously getting a good supply of iron as some had a dip in their ferritin which then recovered.
