Aptamil not dissolving

itsme189 · 13/10/2024 22:10

Baby is 3 weeks old and until now we have given her the pre made aptamil as me and my husband have both been sick with Covid and wanted the easy life!

We used the prep machine to make a bottle with powder aptamil and no matter how much we shook it the powder didn't seem to fully dissolve it was on the sides of the bottle! We have tried stirring and swirling and got the same! Does anyone know how to fix this?

She has also done many many liquid poops today since using the powder is this normal?

Have you tried making a bottle to the instructions on the tub with the whole bottle 70+ degrees?

Like boiling the kettle and waiting 30 mins to make the bottle? No we haven't cause it's impossible to time, she goes from asleep to screaming hungry in minutes and we can't make her wait 30 minutes screaming I don't know how people do it with newborns I understand when she is more in a routine!

I would definitely try doing that and seeing if the powder dissolves in hot water. You can cool the bottle quickly after in a bowl or iced water or under a cold tap.

Honestly I'll have to use different formula if I have to wait 30 mins for every bottle it doesn't seem long until you have a screaming newborn at 3am haha

You don't need to wait 30 minutes, it's no longer than 30 minutes if you have boiled a litre.
You can boil just enough for the bottle and it will cool much quicker.
You can also make the bottle a bit in advance and use within 2 hours, you don't have to wait til the baby is crying to make it.

Try making a bottle as PP said and popping it in the fridge & then warm up when needed? Formula can be pre made in the fridge for 24hrs. It sounds like the prep machine isn’t hot enough for the powder to dissolve

It says not to make it in advance and store it in the fridge though?

There is so much conflicting info! I just don't understand how so many people recommend the prep machine and use it if it doesn't work!

Ah okay thanks I see I can try this wish I hadn't wasted money on the machine if it doesn't work

NHS advise you can do this. I combi fed and did this with no issues. I personally don’t trust the prep machine but that’s not to say it doesn’t work for many others

Defo make in advance and store in the back of the fridge. DS was on the same formula and it was his consultant who advised us to do this.

Also. It's a faff but measure out your liquid, but don't put your scoops of formula into the full amount. Put the scoops into an oz or two of water and then mix it before topping up the rest of the water. This was it dissolved better without us needing to shake the bottle which just gave him wind. I ended up putting the scoops of powder into 4 bottles then using a 5th bottle to measure out the liquid to make them up and storing them in the back of the fridge for late.

If you don't want to make and store, your other option is to make mix the powder with a couple of oz of boiling water which kills any bacteria that might be present, and then top up the remaining ounces with cooled boiled water - again, this was told to us by his consultant and the nurses on the ward.
