Why does ds sometimes "fight" at the breast even though he is clearly hungry?

He doesn't do it all the time but when he does he ends up so frustrated and it's hard to soothe him. I find myself having to relatch him regularly, with him crying in between. eventually he settles and feeds properly.

Am I miss reading the signs of hunger? TBH I do tend to be a bit "If in doubt stick a boob in his mouth"

I didn't feed on demand with my first (my ignorance about BF was quite astounding ) but have been doing so this time. Should I be trying other things before offering breast?

I often used to misread 'tired' as 'hungry' - dd would fight the breast a bit as she didn't really want to eat, but, being tired, did want the soothing / cuddling aspect of it, so would eventually feed for a bit and then drop off to sleep.

Once I'd got my head round the fact she couldn't really stay awake for more than 2h at a stretch I got better at spotting 'tired' cues earlier and was less mixed up.

I do have a fast let down and ds often comes off to catch his breath. It tends to be when there has been a shorter gap to. DS1 had more of a pattern to his feeds at this point (7 weeks) but ds2 is really still all over the place.

You could be right about being tired as this morning when he was fighting it he did fall asleep and is still napping now.
