having a c section at 39 weeks - will my milk come through?

On recommendation of consultant because of my funny pelvis and emergency c section last time finally decided to go for elective, booked for 39 weeks [fairly soon!] I mentioned the worry of whether my milk will come through, and she said it may be difficult and baby might need 'top ups' at first. This worried me as I don't really want to do that. Is there anything I can do to get my milk to come through? will I be able to avoid supplementary feeding? Bit concerned. I breast fed ds till he was well into toddlerhood but stopped in early pregnancy, so guess that doesn't help.

Ruty at that mw!
Make sure you put your wishes in your birth plan and am sure all will go fine. Looking forward to the announcement!

Glad you've reached a decision about where to go with the birth Yes, your milk will come in - just get baby latched on as soon as poss. - after my crash section I fed dd 1 hour later in recovery and we never looked back. I think milk came day 4 or 5 , but she fed like a trooper from the off! Good luck

I had an emergency section at 37 weeks, had to use breast pump at first (DS wouldn't latch on) but by day 4 the milk was running down my legs.

Me too Rascal - I had a crash section under GA at 34 weeks, pumped within hours and the nurses on NICU couldn't believe how much I could produce! I think I filled their freezer to capacity

So even with a general anaesthetic, no direct sucking and no skin-to-skin with the baby and I still managed to make milk Ruty. The body is a marvellous thing - have faith

Ruty, you already know this but just wanted to add to the voices of posters saying tha the consultant talks out of her proverbial.

I had crash crash section at 40 weeks and elective section at 39 + 3 weeks. Milk came in like rocks at 3 and 2.5 days' respectively. No problems. No top ups. What an idiot.

No it's baloney. I had an emergency CS at 36weeks - no probs with milk coming through.

NotABanana · 23/04/2008 13:11

I am sorry but I think whoever said you might need top ups of formula, they are talking out of their ear hole.

I had an emergency section at 38 weeks and I could breast feed. Baby was born at 7pm and I couldn't feed him until after 10pm but that was due to him needing an xray, nothing to do with milk supply. He had colostrum until my milk came in on Wednesday and then I fed him 2 hourly for 6 months.

Good luck with the birth.

Apologies if it's already been said - don't worry if you can't put the baby to the breast asap after birth. It's great if you can but with DD2 I was in theatre for complications for over an hour after my DD was born. I didn't hold her til she was about 2 hours old and then I just plonked her on my chest and she got on with it! The baby knows what to do, so just relax and it will all happen

Pennypops · 23/04/2008 13:26

I had an emergency CS at term and mine came in right on cue on day 3. The midwives at the birth knew the birth hadn't exactly gone to plan (understatement of century) and did their best to give me the one little thing left that they could which was skin to skin as soon as possible. We had the most gorgeous cuddle as soon as I got back to the room and he latched on there and then, clever boy! I will always be grateful to those two midwives for helping me and my ds get off to a good start!

Best of luck!

Its good to hear all of the positive stories here.
I tried to breast feed until I got home from hopsital and then my baby was screaming for milk so much I gave up and gave formula as I couldn't get to her easliy.
i had tried using a breast pump as well, but my milk just didnt come in, I was in hospital 6 days and I struggled. Its good to hear about the positive stories but i just wanted to add mine not to be controversial but to give the other side, and to say if it doesn't happen don't beat yourself up about it. I still can't understand why mine didn't come in, i had all of the help in the world from the hospital midwives
