Formula feeding away from home, please help?

Hoping someone can help! I have an almost four week old baby, she's formula fed, and I'm in a situation where I need to be out of the house for approximately 4 and a half hours, two days a week, and won't be in a position to freshly boil water.

How on earth do I feed her while out?? It hasn't been an issue so far as I haven't really left the house because I had a c section and wasn't allowed to drive, but now I will be out of the house as mentioned.
There's so much conflicting advice about how to treat formula powder and remaking bottles etc.

Can anyone genuinely recommend the likes of the Nuby rapid cool? I know this will really only allow for one bottle but I'm hoping that should be enough for the time I'm away from home. How long does their green insulated flask keep boiling water hot? Or the Tommee Tippee ones any good??

So for example today I will be leaving the house at 11am - I could make a bottle up that she can have as long as she's hungry within about 2 hours (impossible to gauge I know), but if she's hungry again before I get home at about 330/4pm, I'm screwed.

Please please help, this is unavoidable and I don't know what to do. Anxiety through the roof 😣😥

Hiya.

I would use the premade formula.

Congratulations on the birth of your lovely daughter.

The pre made single use formula bottles is the easiest option. Most of the main formula brands make them. Pack enough spare sterilised bottles and then just decant the formula in when she's hungry. Will be room temp though obviously..depends if that's ok.

Other options that we did involve lots of faffing around in cafes. Pack enough spare sterilised bottles and pre load with enough formula powder and then ask cafe for boiling water (you'd have to ask for it in a cup or jug and then re-pour yourself as most cafes won't handle a bottle for health and safety reasons). Then there's the cooling, large bowl of cold water or time it and prep 2 hours after setting off and just wait it out till it cools.

Second option is not ideal for obvious reasons, we have done this when they're a bit older than your baby but for a 4 week old I'd prefer the first idea as it's more hygienic and instant. My eldest was fine when he was a baby he'd drink any milk bug my youngest was fussy with temperature though but eventually adapted.

I initially used pre made formula for my convinced baby. That soon got expensive. Invested in the nuby rapid cool - Aldi had a special buy with it recently so it came with the rapid cool and insulated flask and I really rate them.

I have used the Nuby rapid cool when out and about but as you say, you can only make one feed before you need to wash and sterilise it again.

Best option to to purchase the pre-made formula milk bottles. They work out about £1 per fees which is expensive but the safest and most convenient way when out and about.

Pre made formula.

I used the hot shot method with my Nuby. So you measure out the hot water in the bottle and then add most of it (but not all) into the Nuby. You want to leave about an oz of boiling water, depending on what measurement your baby is on, in the bottom of the bottle and that’s what you add your formula to, to sterilise it. Then cool the remaining water in the Nuby and add to your hot formula. Might take a couple of extra minutes to be cooled enough, but this way you don’t have to sterilise the Nuby every time because you have only added water to it.

Take a flask of boiling water out with you and make the bottle up 30mins before its needed so it has time to cool. If you need it sooner ask for some Ice and a pint glass in a cafe/restaurant.

LittleMsSunny · 09/10/2024 15:19

Water only has to be above 70 degrees to kill bacteria in formula so it will stay this hot in a full flask for 4 hours.

Gettoachiro · 09/10/2024 15:22

Pre made. Easy as pie.

TakeMe2Insanity · 09/10/2024 15:24

Initially we used pre made but then baby became allergic to soya (in all pre made formula). We store hot water in a flask, use the nubi to
cool, and take decanted powder in a smaller container.

Pre made and a travel bottle warmer? I have the tommee tippee one it's basically a flask with a lid big enough to put a bottle in. Really good flask though! Would recommend it over the rapid cool flask but adore and really rate the rapid cool itself. Don't tie yourself in knots, baby will be fine Flowers
