SIL has bn told this by the mw. She is 6 months pregnant and very keen to bf, as she didn't manage last time. Has anyone any experience of bf having had spd? How lomg did the symptoms take to go away?

Many thanks.

I had awful spd with dd2 and dd3

they went away within a few days of the births

I bf dd2 till she self weaned at 9 months

I am still bf dd3 (gecko) she is 14 months

I had spd with my last 2 ds's, and have bf both of them ds1 until 20months, and still feeding ds2 at 11months, I was on crutches with both of them, 6 weeks with 1 and 10weeks with the other, I was better after a few days with ds1 and it was about 3weeks with ds2, no one told me of a link, and I saw about 6 different specialists!

Sounds really positive.

Any other experiences? I will forward to my SIL to cheer her up!

I had spd badly last pregnancy and bf my son for 2 years. Spd disappeared immediately after birth.

I had awful SPD with my DS - had to be signed off work as couldn't walk further than a few metres.

I was merrily pushing his pram up the hill and back when he was 5 days old

ChasingButterflies · 21/04/2008 20:59

I had SPD; it was much, much better within days of the birth, still bf ds at 6mo. is your SIL seeing an obstetric physio to help her with this?

sweetkitty · 21/04/2008 21:01

I've had SPD with all three pregnancies, with the last two it virtually disappeared as soon as the placenta was out. BF both of them to a year and beyond no problems.

no it doesn't make spd worse or prolong symptoms as different hormones are involved. it's a common myth though cos I know a few women who've been told it. i;ve never met anyone who found it to be true.

happynappies · 21/04/2008 21:15

I had v. bad SPD, and I'm afraid it didn't disappear straight after the birth as I expected it would. I'm still bf my 17 month old daughter now, and still receiving treatment for SPD. I'm sure it isn't the bf that has prolonged the SPD though - it was more the fact that it was mis-diagnosed, and lots of damage was done during labour/delivery. If your SIL has the right support and has it in HUGE capital letters on her birth plan she should be fine.

Thanks all. Your points have been passed to my SIL.

I had SPD to the point of being in a wheelchair some days.
I am still feeding DD2 at 7months, and although my systoms didnt go straight away it did in the end. I would say go for it

Clydesdaleclopper · 21/04/2008 22:30

I had very bad SPD - on crutches from 18 weeks pregnant and in a wheelchair for the last 6 weeks. I am vastly better than then but still having a lot of problems and DS is 7 months old. My physio told me that bfing was prolonging it but I'm not prepared to give up bfing.
