Upper lip tie?

dune2003 · 26/09/2024 13:55

My DD is 12 days old and has had latching problems since birth.

We introduced formula along with BF as I was concerned she wasn’t getting enough milk. I then had mastitis in both breasts and decided to give up BF. I didn’t express as I read a few posts about implants rupturing from pumping.

She takes a bottle well but noticed her top lip curls over the teat and is often red afterwards and hiccups a lot as well as reflux and constipation.

could this be due to upper lip tie? How is it treated? I read not much is done on the NHS for it and worth seeing someone privately?

Upper lip tie?

I'm not an expert by any means but I have heard that lip ties rarely present without a Tongue Tue also being present.

Does LO have any of these symptoms?

Yes she has most of those symptoms.

the GP has seen her and advised they don’t rectify them at such a young age in the UK and it will normally grow out.

I only know from our personal experience, but DS had a tongue tie and an upper lip tie. He had the tongue tie cut on the NHS but they said they don't treat lip ties, just wait for them to stretch out as they get older.

I was born with a lip tie (no tongue tie) . I had it removed at around 10 years old under local anaesthetic at my local hospital, but only because it was making my adult top front teeth grow in with a gap. I'm in my 50s.

In that case can you see a Tongue Tie Practitioner?

We had years of problems affecting sleep, eating and kids and speech Flowers

The NHS is sadly hopeless at assessing tongue and lip ties. My DD2 saw 6 or 7 different NHS professionals for breastfeeding issues before I went privately and she was diagnosed with a 90% tongue tie. If you are near south London, I can recommend who I used. It was £40 for an initial assessment. I got hers cut privately, which cost a lot but you can go back to the NHS for it to be divided (expect several weeks wait though).

My daughter had a very prominent lip tie and a fairly minor tongue tie. I had the tongue tie snipped (privately - NHS midwives/gp weren't interested) but I never touched the lip, and it's never been a problem (teeth have come in and closed up as normal, it's no longer noticeable).

Not always. My daughter has lip tie but no tongue tie

Yeah it's definitely not a hard and fast rule but the OP has said that her DD has a lot of the symptoms Wink

Hi @dune2003 was just wondering how you got on with this? I took my 12 day old son to a lactation consultant yesterday who said she thinks he has a severe lip and tongue tie which is affecting feeding…

We took her to see a maxillofacial dental surgeon who advised it wasn’t a severe upper lip tie and that she has good tongue movement.

They advised it will likely grow out and he wouldn’t do anything with it, so we’re going to leave it.

she does take down extra air when feeding but we’ve changed her milk and now pace feed which seems to help with her reflux.

if you’re based in south wales I can give you the name of the specialist dentist we took her to.

My DS had a tongue tie. The NHS said they weren’t doing them during Covid so we went and had it done privately when he was about 2 weeks old. I recall we paid something like £250. It was really quick and easy and sorted out the feeding issues immediately.
