one of my post natal friends thinks her dd has self weaned at 9 months

do you think this is possible, or could it be a nursing strike?

friend seems to think it wasn't a strike as her dd just wouldnt feed, just stopped being interested, she kept offering the breast for a few weeks, but baby wasn't intrested.

DS1 self weaned at 10 months. He just decided he didn't want it anymore.

he just turned away with no intention to latch on. it was a nighttime feed, so i tried again in the morning and he did the exact same. I tried several times that day, no luck. and so i thought it just seemed like the right time to stop.

oh thanks db, sounds like a great way to end bf, when baby has decided he/she has had enough

yes. he was born very unwell and spent a week in NICU tube fed. It took months to establish breastfeeding so i'm not sure i could have made the decision to stop after all that hard work. I was too greatful to have managed to do it at all.
I'm glad the weaning was easy.

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 21/04/2008 15:14

wow, im glad the weaning was easaier for you than getting it established, hope he is well now. you have clearly done v well

go db,go !

hardest thing i've ever done.
nearly 4 years ago now though. and he's 100% now.
DS2 fed with no problems and i'm afraid i wasn't so determined. Thankfully he didn't complain when i gave him a bottle at six months.
It would have been nicer to wait for him to self wean but i'm not sure they all do.

Sorry VP, didn't even notice your first post and therefore really didn't 'get' your second one.
I've read the link.
He was nearly a year and it was gradual as he was mostly having a quick feed at night to get to sleep and then a little thirst quencher first thing in the morning. He was also eating well.
So i believe he did.

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 21/04/2008 15:49

yeah sorry got one eye on mn one eye on countdown, yes i keep pausing it sky+[cheat]
lol

My son did exactly the same thing as Dragonbutters but at 9 months.

Didn't think there was much point perservering as it was obvious he wasn't interested.

On the other hand (or boob) number 3 shows no sign of wanting to stop at 16m ... just shows they are all different ...

AnyFuleKno · 22/04/2008 23:07

Interesting topic this...if a baby does self wean before 12 months of age, would you need to give any other kind of milk or are they ok on solids and water/juice at that age?

AnyFuleKno · 22/04/2008 23:11

Fruit juice I mean not tizer, ahem.

Pavlovthecat · 22/04/2008 23:11

yes, DD did, much to my absolute dismay. It was my fault tho.

I had tried getting her onto a bottle for expressed milk for when I went to work, she was having none of it.

So I stopped expressing so much. DH bought a different bottle, DD loved, I could not express enough, so she had formula in the day from 7-8 months during the day, and bf morning and evening. By 10.5 months she decided she prefered the bottle and stopped wanting to bf. Just, lost interest. It was very sad.

Except for DH, he loved it.
