Aptamil Pepti

Might be a silly question but my boy has been on Aptamil Pepti since 6 weeks old but now he is 12 weeks, doctor declined my repeat prescription as I now apparently have to purchase it myself.
I thought prescriptions for under 16s are free so I’m confused, was this the case for anyone else?

Prescriptions are free to the kids but not to the health service. Baby milk is very expensive, it's a cost cutting measure.

I understand that but if it’s so widely available over the counter, like the receptionist said I don’t need a prescription slip to get it, why bother prescribing it in the first place 😂
methadone is free for drug users but specialist formula for babies isn’t, I can’t quite grasp that to be honest

That's strange as I can still get it on prescription

MissEloiseBridgerton · 25/09/2024 14:17

Yes but you can't buy methadone and if drug addicts are on methadone, they are less likely to die. That's a ridiculous comparison.

It's like not prescribing paracetamol any more as you can easily buy it. Your baby won't need baby milk forever.

It’s really not though. Imagine a single mother with limited income, having to spend £200 monthly on specialist formula? It’s ridiculous. It’s not anyone’s fault that a baby has allergies.

whereas people who choose to take drugs then have free methadone to get off drugs 🤣

paracetamol costs less than £1 usually.
specialist milk goes from £25 up for 800g tin.
a baby on 6oz a feed 5x a day, has approx 220g formula a day. So around 2x 800g tins a week and the more baby grows the more they need.
All I’m saying is, those with limited income won’t be able to cover those costs.

That’s interesting, I can’t really make sense of it to be honest

Can you try an alternative doctor?

I might have to. It just doesn’t seem right to be honest. I get it’s expensive for the nhs, however for us regular people, it’s a lot of money.. double the cost of regular formula
