Sore right breast unless it's full

The title says it all really. I'm fully bfing my DS who was 4 weeks old on friday. We struggled to start with, with him having to be tube fed initially then was jaundiced and too sleepy to suck. We got there eventually, and now I'm not really looking forward to evenings because he feeds lots more, and unless my right breast is nice and full it's really sore, I'm sticking with it so that my supply doesn't go down on that side but would like to know why. His latch is fine and I have no cracks or bleeding or anything, it's like it's the inside of the nipple that doesn't like being sucked on so hard. I'm very fair skinned if that makes any difference? My left breast is completely fine.

Well done for sticking with it.

What kind of pain is it and does it continue throughout the feed? And has it always been like that?

I think you need to ask your health visitor, you need someone to see you in person.

Hopefully someone with more help will get back to you. x

It's just very uncomfortable, worse when he sucks harder and it throbs a bit for a while after he's had a monster feed that side. It's not a pain as such, just very sore. It's different to the toe curling bit when he first latches on that lasts a few seconds, I get that bit on the other side too but not this other soreness.

There's a breastfeeding clinic a bus ride away on thursday, I'll go along and see what they say.

I know you say his latch is fine but sometimes mine is on just a bit far up or down or left or right IYSWIM and that can hurt. They will still feed though as the nipple is in the right place. As it starts okay, maybe he is slipping down?

Might be worth repositioning cushions around you, trying different heights? Have you tried the rugby/football position? (Can't remember which one they call it) With him under the same arm as the side he's feeding?

Good luck with the clinic, I found them invaluable. Although the first time I left in tears but that's a long story!

Are you on the pill by any chance? I am and i get breast pain on the right side esp when lying down/sleeping.
Just a thought

I'm not on the pill so it's not that.

I can only feed using the rugby ball position, my breasts are quite big and he can't latch on sideways, or if he does manage he can't breathe cos his nose is smothered!

Thankyou to you both for your thoughts!
