Will porridge make my baby sleep longer?

I'm curious

I have a nearly 5 month old and I'm thinking about weaning when she's 5.5 months - just some baby porridge before bed with the hope of her sleeping longer stretches.

Currently she sleeps at 10, wakes at 2.30, 5.30 and 7 for a feed.

Please don't say give her more in the day as shes not a keen drinker and only drinks what she needs to at the time.

Just wondering if anyone else has done this and achieved better sleep??

You could try it. DS was weaned at 5.5 mths as he insisted on helping himself to my food. He def slept better after avocadoes or chicken dipped in peanut butter than porridge though. I think the protein helped settle him.

Poor you😢You must be exhausted. Had 4 kids all just did their own thing sleep wise and I tried everything. I therefore have no answers but sympathise.

Nope and I've had 3 kids it doesnt work so may as well wait to wean at 6 months

It’s calorie density.

carrots for example may fill their stomachs, but there’s no where near as many calories as the same volume of milk. So they wake in the night hungry.

unless your giving something that has more calories than milk for the same volume there’s not much point.

before 6 months you’re really stuck with the veg purées and rice, which won’t do it. It’ll fill her up, she won’t take as much milk, and wakings will increase. After 6m when you can give meat and other calorie dense foods it may help.

my rule of thumb for weaning is they needed to eat as well as take their milk. If you replace milk with solids their calorie intake will drop and again, back to night wakings.

You can try it, both mine were weaned at 5.5 months because they seemed ready- some will be ready a bit before 6 months, some a bit after.
Sorry to say it made no difference whatsoever to their sleep

Nope or it would be flying off the shelves :)

My daughter was the same so I weaned at 5.5 months due to reflux and no sleep… it didn’t help us at all

Mummyboy1 · 21/09/2024 16:42

If the baby is genuinely hungry then it may help. If there are other sleep issues, then probably not

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 21/09/2024 16:48

Nope.

Baby will sleep when baby is ready.
