Maybe unnecessary worry over 3 day old?

Hi everyone. I’ve just had my third baby and I don’t know why but I’m having some panic and anxiety over her. She was born Wednesday afternoon so is 3 days old now. She latched immediately within the first 30-60 minutes of being born and pretty much was on and off during our whole hospital stay for 24ish hours. However, during the night she did start to scream and fight the boob every time I tried to get her to latch, something my other two never did so it’s very new to me.

Eventually she would latch back on but maybe only for 5-10 mins and then she would scream again. I would try rocking her, wind her, check nappy and repeat allllllllll night until come 5am she finally gave in and slept in the crib for 3-4 hours. Anyway, ever since we’ve got back home she’s been doing this at random times, mostly night but it can be morning or afternoon too, randomly screaming when attempting to latch on.

When she is latched it’s fine and it’s not sore or anything. My milk must have come in yesterday as I have now started to feel the letdown and hear her constantly swallowing when she actually has a real good feed. Her poops have changed to dark green and although there never seems to be wee in her nappies (I know not accurate but no blue line) we have had her wee on us during pretty much every nappy change. We changed her about an hour a go and she soaked the baby mat with wee.

Does anything sound concerning? My first took a while to get to grips with breastfeeding but my second got the hang of it immediately and was the most perfect feeder imaginable, even putting on 11lbs before his 5 day weigh in. Like I said my anxiety is through the roof for some reason 😩

Congratulations! This all sounds normal to me. You could ask your local NCT peer support worker to do a home visit if you like. Remember midwives and health visitors have no mandatory training in bf.

I use cloth nappies so have never had a blue line to monitor wetness. You could put a muslin in the nappy or just go with your gut. Honestly I think all is normal.

Thank you so much! It’s all very new to me as I haven’t faced these anxieties in regards to breastfeeding before. I know it’s probably a little silly but my sister in law has baby scales from when she was worried about her baby last year and I weighed her with them today. I worked out she’s lost 7-8oz in weight so far so about 8% of her birth weight. I think the midwife is coming tomorrow and will weigh her too so we shall see.

She did just have a huuuuge feed for maybe a good 45 minutes which has seriously made me happy. I also finally have just changed a nappy with a blue line!!! It was pretty saturated with urine and it was so nice to see. Fingers crossed now my milk is properly in she can stop losing the weight and maybe slowly put it back on. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

An update on this (because I know if there’s mums like me anywhere they may come across this thread in the future) baby is now 5 days old and I have counted up at least 8 decent feeds today, can also see the milky coating on her tongue and her mouth appearing wet after feeds which fills me with delight.

I got it wrong and the midwife hasn’t come today, I think it’s possibly tomorrow so I will update then regarding how much she weighs. I tried all night last night to feed every 2 hours, even hand expressed some in to a bottle (think I managed 35mls) and she only took 10ml of it which I found reassuring as surely if she was starving and not getting milk from me she would have had the lot?

Anyway, this afternoon she’s also done two big poops. They are still dark green in colour but one was ever so slightly dark brown. They are no longer tar like and sticky so I’m happy it doesn’t mean they are still meconium. She also is still only really doing wees when she’s changed, either that or her nappies are doing a fantastic job at absorbing the urine.
