oooh, remind me again - how long does it take for a newborn's guts to sort themselves out?

dd3 is 1 wk old and her evening pattern is as such:
feed, settle, wake up after 1 hr, crying, gut probs, then won't settle, overtired etc.
it is getting on my nerves (or should I say tits?)
Roughly how long before the guts are somewhat sorted? (please don't tell me 18 yrs..)

About the same length of time that morning sickness lasts? After all - having a full tummy is a new experience - all the nourishment was delivered straight into the bloodstream for the last 9 months - none of this eating, digesting and excreting business. It is hard work though - it will get better - honestly. One week old is very small - just keep feeding and changing..............I hope somebody is looking after you?

I guess the "best" answer that you would like to hear is that it will only be another day or 2...

In my case it was around 3 months with both my dds. BUT you do get used to it. When we had dd2 it was a shock because we had got used to dealing with a 3.7 year old and kind of forgot that babies rob you of your evenings and then go on to disrupt your sleep...The evening were the hardest for me.

I still remember those early weeks and I did find them very hard - she is 8 mths now.

I tried to eat regularly and find something to occupy myself during the long feeds (books, mnet or whatever)

Hope you get a few hours rest tonight.

?????

I am a bit puzzled by this - babies come into the world perfectly able and ready to digest breastmilk without problems...the analogy with morning sickness is way off!!

If a baby of a week old cries an hour after feeding, then the simplest reason is that she needs feeding again! Normal.

It was meant to be a slightly light hearted tongue in cheek comment Tik Tok. Of course they come into the world physiologically equipped to eat - just as women are generally physiologically equipped for pregnancy and birth. But it does take a few weeks to get into the swing of things - thats all. Some babies need time to get the hang of feeding, some are windy, some are colicky ...
