Breastfeeding toddler suddenly causing pain

ds is 20 months and has been having just 2 feeds a day for about 6 months now with the occasional feed if he's teething during the day.

the last few days my nipples have been hurting a lot when he feeds, at first i put it down to him tugging or something but last night, this morning and tonight the pain has been even worse and both nipples have hurt, even though he only feeds from one breast at each feed.

am at a lose as to what's causing it but it's making bf-ing a bit miserable at the minute as i'm desperate for him to get off and he can tell something's wrong.

milk flow seems to be just fine.... hard to tell as my breasts haven't gotton that full feeling since about 9 months but he seems happy with how much milk he's getting and i can express a few drops easily once he comes off

any ideas?

could you be pregnant?
actually now that i think about it my nipples would get quite sore when i was nursing my toddler. maybe it's the latch? (i know that sounds silly but toddlers - well my toddler - would get quite lazy about how he latched on)

my last period started about the 26th of last month so i doubt i could be pregnant yet... certainly never had syptoms early with either of my other 2.

was bf-ing dd when i got preg with ds but honestly can't remember whether bf-ing started to hurt. i know she went off it fairly quickly though.

laziness could be a factor... it's the fact that both hurt at the same time that has me baffled

i think the latch is definitely a factor, he's always been lazy about feeding from day one.... i had to spend weeks when he was born teaching him how to feed (thank god he wasn't my first!) and he's gotton into the habit lately of trying to feed while lying on his tummy next to me in the morning when we're in bed throws a tantrum if i try and adjust him. bit better in the evenings but his sister is bouncing around the bed while he feeds and he tries to watch her and feed at the same time.

is it just sympathy pain in the opposite side then you think?

definitely didn't ov 5 days ago... think i did yesterday so that rules out pregnancy i'd say

Do yo have pain-even slight in the breasts? that could be thrush inside the breast or if no pain, maybe thrush of the nipples? I have it again...very painful.

PinkTulips · 18/04/2008 17:38

nope, just nipple and bit around the nipple that i've temporarily forgotton the name of

sorry you're suffering solo, have you been to the gp?

went to GP and he gave me some clamizeriole(sp)thrush cream anyway...spoke to LL the first time when Dd was just a few weeks old and they suggested bathing nipples in diluted vinegar, so I combined the two and it worked...but this is the 5th time in 16months and I had cracked nipples last month for which I bought Silverettes. They do work on cracks and sores etc, but no effect on the thrush-possibly because it's inside and not surface? Anyway, I highly recommend them PinkTulips and I paid just £10+pp.which was £2.50. They are usually £30. Worth every penny if you want to continue bf your lo, and it worked over night too!
Hope you get sorted soon, you totally have my sympathy.
