I am TERRIFIED of feeding table foods to my 13m old. She is my 3rd. No issues with my older two: she is eating mashed versions of what we eat. I haven’t even given her toast in case she chokes! Can anyone offer any advice or tips to help me overcome this? Feel like I’m failing her

No advice to offer as I'm in the same position as you!

My little one is 12 months and he doesn't try to chew anything, just tries to swallow it so we've had some back gagging episodes and I just don't have the confidence to give him large chunks or let him bite stuff!

Is there anything different this time around @Da138? Have you had any Post Natal Anxiety?

You know already that chewing is really good for them. How would you feel if there was another adult at home when you tried her with some finger foods?

Have you watched a Video of what to do if DC3 chokes? And do you think that attending a Paediatric First Aid course might help? Flowers

Nothing different that immediately jumps out - I have a 9 year age gap between middle and last child though so could be that?

I have tried when husband is home - no different! He has attempted to give her finger food and I panic and stop it 🙁 z

i will certainly look into a first aid course and watch that video. Thanks for taking the time to respond

@Hazzyyy its such a worry isn’t it! I feel slightly better that I’m not alone though and someone else feels the same!

I felt so anxious about choking also when weaning my little one (first child). Found the following helped:

  • learning what first aid to do if a choking happens
  • solid starts app shows you how to cut, cool and serve according to age
  • I stuck to pouches and what I felt comfortable with when out and about
  • I did more 'chewing' foods when at home, more relaxed etc.
  • over cooked/steamed foods if that's what I was more settled with

It gets easier as time went on. I was defo more protective of what I would offer him and compared to friends who were braver, it hasn't done him any harm. His 2.5 years old now and eats everything! Loves steak, apples etc and is confident eating chewy stuff xx

Flowergirl has given you some great advice but in a bit sorrow about your level of anxiety. LO is 13 months and can cope with eating Wink

Are you doing anything to help with your anxiety?

Bobbie12345 · 07/08/2024 07:18

It sounds like deep down you know that this next step needs to happen. If dad is more confident can you go out a few times and let him get on with it? You will be nervous and wish you were home, but you won’t be able to do anything about it and he will get the first bits done. Might be better than having your anxiety creating tension in the room for your little one.

@flowergirl2020 thank you for your advice! That is really helpful 😊

@Bobbie12345 yes completely agree, I think this is what we will need to do moving forward! Thank you
