Less interested on the second side

My 5 week old used to feed happily for about 20-30 mins on one side. Have a burp and a quick rest and then go on the second side for about 15-20 mins.
She is now just going on one side for about 20-30 mins and then falls asleep and isnt interested in the second side.

Do I have anything to worry about? She's been doing this since we introduced infacol 3 days ago (coincidence?).

I'm not sure really, but the HV and midwives I saw said only feed from 1 boob, if they come off offer the same one again and only to swap if they still seem hungry. My son was well over 1 before he had 2 boobs! I remember reading somewhere that it takes about 6 weeks for your body to adjust correctly to the amounts of milk your baby needs-can't remember where I read it though so don't quote me on that. If she seems happy, is growing and having lots of wet and pooee nappies I'd say not to worry imo, although never used infacol

Maybe it's just that your boobs are more efficient at producing milk now that you have been feeding for 5 weeks. Have a look at www.kellymom.com for more information on the supply & demand thing.

I've always worked on the basis that if you offer the second side, they'll take it if still hungry.

It might help to note down the frequency of her feeds, it might be that she is eating a bit less more frequently. But as long as she is becoming a bit more alert when awake, producing half a dozen wet and/or dirty nappies a day, and gaining weight (not necessarily as per the HV red books - some of which use growth charts based on formula fed babies), then I don't think you should panic.

Also, if you have concerns about your supply of milk, make sure you are getting lots of good food and adequate rest. A couple of days pigging out and taking it easy should see your milk supply increase - at 5 weeks you'll probably notice a difference in your breasts (they'll feel fuller). Certain foods are also supposed to increase your supply, e.g. oatmeal.

Breastfeeding does seem like a bit of an act of faith - especially when it is your first baby - how do you know what they are getting etc.? But it works, and it is really good for your baby & you - so well done and keep going!

Thanks for the advice, feel much more reassured. Also, she has done quite a few poos since I posted this

Other thing that occurred to me today is also that your baby's sucking technique will improve as she gets older and she may be able to get what she needs from the one boob. The other thing you could try if you are still concerned, is waking her up by changing her nappy between boobs. At 5 weeks I think I was doing that with my DS2 as he was quite a sleepy baby and I was a bit concerned that he wasn't getting enough either.

If you have any concerns try to call a breastfeeding counsellor (try La Leche League or Association of Breastfeeding Mothers websites for numbers), so you have someone local to talk it through with. Often I think it's down to confidence - you need to talk to someone who is up to speed on breastfeeding and who believes in it too. All too often I hear things that HVs or MWs say about breastfeeding that makes me think they have more faith in formula. Breastfeeding does work, and it's lovely when your baby is 4 mths plus, and your supply is established, baby sucks well & looks healthy, and you can luxuriate in the lovely quiet intimacy of the feeds.

Good luck.

I always did one boob. DS had no interest in my right one. It gets better as they get older and stronger but don't worry about it. The worst that can happen is you get uneven boobs (for a period of time) and odd nipple shapes (presumably until you have the next one and you feed him/her exclusively from the other side)>.

the nappy change has helped thanks! Also, I am sure that she is getting more efficient and the poo and wee signs are still there so i am not as worried. thanks all!
