Any thoughts on what’s going on? DS now 11 weeks

  • baby was 95th centile at birth
  • lost 10% initially due to traumatic birth and latching issues and milk coming in late
  • introduced formula top ups
  • weight gain on day 7 better since formula top ups
  • since then very slow weight gain, dropped 2 or 3 centiles (95-below50)
  • had his tongue tie fixed in last few weeks and weight gain has actually slowed even further
  • falls asleep on boob (could be tired from getting milk)
  • Feeding literally every hour on boob
  • 1 or 2 bottles in evening to give me a break
  • in last few weeks isn’t sleeping longer than 2 hours if that
  • poos have been really frequent and midwife we saw said they were very loose, but always been like this and actually now I’ve researched it it may have always contained mucus
  • crying a lot (colic?)
  • More spit ups recently
  • not getting better, getting worse

sorry for essay, but any thoughts or any similar experiences? Seeing GP tomorrow to see what they think. Confused about whether you are supposed to see GP or HV. System seems confusing to me.

Thanks in advance xx

I think it varies regionally whether it's GP or HV, but if the GP is willing to see you, then that's great. You can also get in touch with HV again and ask them to visit again.

Does your DS have a rash on their face? And when crying, do he seem like he's in pain? As it could be CMPA. Worth mentioning it, your GP may advise cutting out dairy and trying CMPA formula.

You've done really well to get to 11 weeks breastfeeding. It's ok to stop breastfeeding and FF and it's ok to continue. Potentially a local breastfeeding group might be a good idea? Or a breastfeeding hotline?

It sounds really stressful, many hugs to you xx

My daughter has many loose poos but they were all I had known so it wasn't until after I had got her food allergies under control and they improved that I realised they were poor.
I think I would be considering a trial of dairy free, low soya diet (soya in food fine but avoid soya dairy and meat replacements - half of babies are allergic to both) and start a food diary at the same time.
My daughter was 9th percentile at birth and was happily following this line although thoroughly miserable in herself. She moved up to the 25-50th after I removed her allergens.
It might be just the dairy in the formula that he is reacting to in which case you wouldn't necessarily need to give up dairy and an extensively hydrolysed formula might be ok. If he is reacting to the dairy proteins in your breastmilk too it is more likely that he will need an amino acid formula although you will probably have to go via an extensively hydrolysed formula first.
It might also be worth exploring reflux treatments my daughter has allergies and reflux which are separate issues although the allergies did make the reflux worse. She requires high dose reflux meds as well as having her allergens excluded from her diet
