feeding chairs

I am thinking of designing a feeding chair. The one i have (the main brand on the market) is really impractical.

What features would you like on the perfect feeding chair?

many thanks for you comments

Adjustable height arms would be good, so you can rest your elbows easily - after all we are all different heights!
I think the chair itself should have adjustable legs so again you can adjust to comfortable level without having to faff around with cushions and footstools.
A small table on a moveable arm to rest drinks/food on.
Back - I guess fairly straight but curved gently inwards on the sides for good support?

Do you mean a chair for an adult to sit in to feed a baby? In that case my main concern is that they are all hideous beige. Why would I want something that ugly in my house? I like bright colours.

fab idea suey! the arms are a big thing for me, as dd although teeny has always been loooong and she sticks her legs out straight when feeding - i would have loved a feeding chair but couldn't see how it would work with her legs v the chair arms.

i actually like the neutral colours but appreciate that many might not - so a choice/removable covers - like the ikea poang chair?

yes, agree with BT a straighter back - or at least adjustable - personally i hate leaning back to feed.

will we be seeing you on dragons den next year?!

I like Caz's idea of the removable covers.

I was mulling over this last night (while on a 1.5 hour feed- I get to mull over a lot of things nowadays). It seems to me like one of the problems with feeding chairs is their image, which is really dowdy. In fact, bf (or bottle-feeding, to be honest) itself isn't seen as very glamorous at all. I would love love love to see a chair designed which had some kind of "wow" factor to it. We're talking Orla Kiely flowers, Kath Kidston cuteness, Paul Smith stripes, Matthew Williamson butterfiles. And the associated celebrity endorsement. Something aspirational and sexy and fun, rather than shabby and dowdy and beige. They have done that with other baby products, like baby bags and (some) pushchairs, but not feeding chairs.

I also wondered if you can also market it as a general high quality chair which happens to be great for feeding. The reason I mention this is that DH has a bad back, and it's only now that we notice that all of the nice armchairs have slightly reclining backs- no good. When we go shopping for a chair with a straight, high back, we get pointed at chairs which look like they belong in old folk homes. Yuk.

well this one is pretty good - the inflatable lumbar support is fantastic, the back is nice and staright, and high enough that you can rest your head on it when knackered at 4am. I like the perchable sides too. And the best thing is it looks quite nice and def not like a dedicated baby item.

I think a little table (like the one you get on some ikea sofas) is a fab idea though. Or at least a cupholder.

Caz10 · 16/04/2008 10:14

ooh mrsbadger i like that one, esp for the no arms factor. please take my credit card away from me someone?

wobbegong · 16/04/2008 10:40

MrsBadger why oh why did I not see that chair four months ago? It looks fantastic.

MrsBadger · 16/04/2008 14:02

it was in the Mothercare catalogue for about 6m and then was never seen again

but it was just at the 6m when I was hugely pg with dd. Lovely old MIL .

(and compared to a farking great glider it's not actually that expensive)

suey2 · 18/04/2008 08:11

oo yes, i did see that one- i was tempted by it, but wanted something to rest lo's head on IYKWIM.
I am having a meeting today- thanks a lot you guys
