In this instance, at least the baby has been returned to her mother. But she was given formula for the 4 weeks they were apart and the mother was given no lactation advice.

Yarl's Wood is such a disgrace. My lovely sister-in-law, who used to be a midwife and is now working for her local PCT in prisoners' health, refused to believe what I told her about Janipher Maseko - she said it was against all official guidelines. They're getting away with it in broad daylight.

theUrbanNixie · 11/04/2008 21:03

LOL Policy. did you tell her you'd met Janipher?

OP posts:
theUrbanNixie · 11/04/2008 21:04

also, detainees at YW aren't prisoners. hence they don't have prisoners' rights.

policywonk · 11/04/2008 21:06

Yes - she still thought I must have misunderstood! She's just too nice to believe that such a thing could happen.

That distinction between prisoners and detainees is very depressing, and a bit Orwellian.

DaisySteiner · 11/04/2008 21:09

My god, what kind of country am I living in?

Jenkeywoo · 11/04/2008 21:12

Yarl's wood is such an evil place and it makes me sick that we're all just chugging along nicely in modern Britain with this barbarism going on right here in this country. I feel so so cross and sad for Glory and baby Tracey.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:17

Also did any of you read the response/comment at the end of the article. Did I misread it or did a mnetter make a comment that seemed quite harsh?

theUrbanNixie · 11/04/2008 21:18

that was me - it is harsh yes. but realistic, unfortunately.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:25

Oh UrbanNixie I misunderstood you on that comment, read it that were saying that "you" and other people were kinda bored with this type of situation, now I see that is not what you meant at all judging by your OP.

  • I understand where you are coming from now.
theUrbanNixie · 11/04/2008 21:38

tis ok lollipop - i'm just used to people saying things like, "Oh well - she shouldn't've been in this country anyway."

not from MN, usually, thankfully. but on Netmums elsewhere.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:43

I know, I was a bit as on initial reading I thought that was what you were saying and I couldn't get my head round it at all. Will steer well clear of certain other websites!

macdoodle · 11/04/2008 22:04

My god I am a hard cow but those are the most heart rending stories

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 22:32

again? jesus, when will they learn!

okay, urban, I have no spare money. What else can we do?

MamaMaiasaura · 11/04/2008 22:36

actually cried reading that. Poor baby and poor mum.

theUrbanNixie · 11/04/2008 22:42

Squonk - not really, i'm afraid. we're trying to organise her some lactation support, but know from last time (Janipher) that Yarl's Wood won't allow us to giver her any lactation support. So i'm going to visit on Wednesday with Morgan (who writes the blog)

If anyone's reading who lives nearby and has a baby around the same age as Tracey (12 weeks) and is bf-ing then it would be really helpful for Glory for her to see someone else bf-ing their baby. I can go in there and breastfeed ds, but breastfeeding a 15 month old and breastfeeding a 12 week old are very different things.

Other than that - Squonk and others - please please email Liam Byrne (minister for immigration and detention), your own local MP, and anyone else you can think of!

I read this story but didn't understand it totally either what is it people are angry and upset about? I'm not being insensitive or anything I genuinely don't get it maybe didn't read it properly....

Stais - Yarl's Wood is an immigration detention centre, which is somewhere asylum seekers get sent if their visa runs out or their asylum application fails.

There are many families detained in there. Glory had her 6 week old baby removed from her and placed in foster care because one of the guards reported her for handling her baby roughly. after 4 weeks baby Tracey was returned to her mother but during the time they were apart there was no provision for Glory's milk to be given to her. There was no instruction or lactation support given to her so she would be helped with pumping her milk and keeping up her supply.

This is what people are so upset about. I've had to put ds back to bed in between starting this post and ending it, so i might have x-posted with a few people...
