breastfeeding in a public swimming baths?

I have just been away for a couple of days and whilst I was in the pool I saw a mother breastfeeding her 10mth old-ish in the pool.

What are peoples opinions of this?Is it acceptable/usual? I have not encountered it before.

I am all for breastfeeding but felt this was a step too far maybe? They were asked nicely to get out and finish which she did .

Well I think the accepted theory is that one can do it anywhere, but personally I would have got out of the water and sat on the side!

Wouldn't it taste slightly chloriney? Baby must have been hungry.

I thought that I was being a bit prudish by thinking it odd. Baby wasnt crying for a feed so maybe she was just pre-empting it? Also baby was in one of those big rubber things so she had to lean over with her boob to feed.
I didnt sit and stare btw she was opposite me in the baby pool.

Sounds blimmin awkward more than anything! Why would you do that rather than nip for a seat at the side?

harpsichordcarrier · 10/04/2008 18:33

who asked her to get out? why is it any different out of the pool?
why is this "a step too far"?
I really don't unerstand
I have sat on the side and shivered and it was not a huge amount of fun

harpsichordcarrier · 10/04/2008 18:34

also, did she have another child with her? she may not have wanted to get everyone out of the pool when it was just as easy to feed in the pool and frankly no-one else's business

goingfor3 · 10/04/2008 18:34

I wouldn't and I'm not shy about public breastfeeding.

I can't see the difference either TBH. Unless she was in the way or something.

QueenBhannae · 10/04/2008 18:39

The lifeguard asked her to get out. No other child no.
It was the way she had to lean over that drew attention to her. step too far was proabably not the right phrase
