Baby hasn't gained as much weight as expected

I had the midwife for our 10 day weight check today. Baby was born and weighed a real chunky 4220g. He only lost 220g at the first weigh in at day 3. By day 5 he had gained 100g back. However between day 5 and today (day 10 weigh in) he has only gained 60g more. The midwife seemed pretty off and was shocked at only 60g in 5 days but quickly back tracked and tried to reassure me when I looked obviously concerned.
He's BF and otherwise seems really well, attentive, feeding well and regularly on demand, waking up for feeds during the night but settling well in between. Lots of wet and dirty nappies.
First time mum so just worrying I am doing something wrong, missing something or should be doing more.
Any advice welcome :)

Make sure you only get your baby weighed over every 7 days and no sooner.

Baby growth isn't linear.

I had the issue that my DD apparently didn't gain weight because there were 5 days between her getting weighed. When I went back 8 days later all was fine.

Baby weighing should be optional and you shouldn't be weighing your baby so often unless you think your baby isn't feeding properly.

Whilst I think this is true longer term, I think it is normal to weigh the baby relatively frequently in the first couple of weeks/until they’ve regained their birth weight.

OP did the midwife suggest any next steps? Eg a feeding plan, topping up with formula/expressed milk, when you should weigh next, hospital admission (this would be a a last resort)? If not, I think she isn’t that worried and you should carry on as you are 🙂

i think a sensible expected weekly amount is 100g so it sounds ok to me over 5 days. Maybe offer a few extra feeds when you can - I literally used to offer a boob at every whimper in the day when they were under a month old, probably hourly. It will help boost your supply.

My experience was that my breast fed babies all settled naturally on a lower percentile than their birth percentile. My kids followed this lower percentile through for years and years and now I have lovely slim healthy coordinated teens. They all take after their father!

Are you up and about? Running around after other children? Locia normal? No chance of any retained pacenta?
Could you go back to bed for a few days , stay fed and watered and feed feed feed? It can make a massive difference.

She is going to reweigh him next week and see where we are at. She didn't suggest anything further as she said he's a big chunky baby and is otherwise well. I think as a FTM it just makes me worry. He's feeding on demand and really frequently, seems to be getting plenty and also seems satisfied too after feeds. I think I just expected more after gaining so much back at day 5. We are only 60g from birth weight so maybe I'm just stressing over nothing.

I think it's the standard here to weigh until back at birth weight, but may be wrong :)

Thanks for your replies 🙂

Do you have any breastfeeding support groups locally you can get help from?
Midwives don't always pick up latch and positioning issues so it might be worth getting it checked

If he seems happy I wouldn’t be too concerned, babies let you know when they are hungry. He could have weighed slightly more if they weighed him just before he emptied his bladder and bowels and been above his birthweight.
