Block milk duct

Hello, I am a first time mum with a 11 week old son. I have been breastfeeding fine with no issue. Two days ago my son slept a lot and so he didn’t feed much. Yesterday my breasts were so painful and one breast has a lump in the aerola and breast area. I found my symptoms closest to a blocked milk duct and not mastitis. I followed what said online - massage the breast should help ease the pain. I tried for one and half day - not see much in improvement. I am a bit impatient, I wonder if anyone had this problem before ? How long it lasted ?

I was a bit afraid it’s breast cancer . Just being thinking the worst.

i wonder should I go see lactation consultant? Health visitor? Midwife or GP?!

thanks!

Congratulations on your new baby!

Massage and feeding from that side should help, I sometimes found a hot water bottle would give a bit of relief too, but mostly massage did the trick. It could be very painful at times but I don't remember it lasting more than a couple of days

I remember having this and it was a blocked milk duct. I remember being told to change the position of the baby during a feed, so for example turn them to face the other way for the milk to be drained from a different angle. Also remember holding pressure on the duct to release it. I am not a professional though I just wanted to reassure you that someone else could relate.. A lactation consultant I imagine will immediately know what you are talking about and will have heard it many times. I think any of those people you mention in your OP could help but always check things with GP if you are worried.

Oh yes I remember hot water bottle really helped. It happened a lot to me and was very sore.

Savoy cabbage leaves, hot shower, use a Hakka while feeding.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy. Get linked into a local breastfeeding support group if you can. They can visit you at home and also support you in groups/potentially online. It's so helpful to have trained support workers on hand and almost three years down the line, I'm now feeding multiple little ones and occasionally need help with toothy latch etc.

Kathryn Stagg has a what to expect week by week video on Instagram that's very good. Lymphatic drainage massage is key to clearing blocked ducts but it's easy to be too heavy handed. Watch this video: https://www.instagram.com/mamas.milk/reel/CQwRIGgn2br/

Thank you so much from everyone replies. They are very useful. And I think my situation has improved after taking a warm bath, massage and feed. I felt not as bad as yesterday.

I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep last night.

Thanks again! :)
