Breastfeeding & Pumping/Expressing questions

I'm a first time mum. My son is almost 9 weeks old and is on 100% breast milk. I feed him three bottles of expressed milk spread throughout the day (morning, afternoon, night) and I breastfeed all other feeds during the day and all the overnight feeds.

Currently I pump for 20 minutes around the same time as each of the bottle feeds, so once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once at night.

1. I want to know if it's possible to pump once a day for all three bottles? So for example, first thing in the morning pump for longer to fill all 3 bottles so that I only pump once a day.

  1. If my son only requires around 4oz per feed, should I only be pumping until I produce that amount of milk? I can get about 8oz from a 20 minute pump using the Medela Freestyle hands free double pump which I'm really enjoying* but should I reduce the time so I only produce around the 4oz that he needs?

Thank you!

Do you have to do three expressed feeds? Because the obvious thing to do is pump once for two feeds. Job done.

Producing 8oz at a time is a huge amount. You might have an oversupply? I always found this Kellymom article https://kellymom.com/hot-topics/pumping_decrease/ about what normal pumping output is useful, but I'm afraid I don't have any advice about the other questions as I could never produce very much at all when pumping. (I know the title isn't quite right but it has a good section about what is normal).

I would look for advice from an IBCLC or try a forum like Reddit where you'll get more people who pump as it's less common in the UK, I think.

I'm not pumping enough milk. What can I do? • KellyMom.com

Milk supply normally varies somewhat throughout the day and over weeks and months. As long as baby is allowed to nurse on cue, your milk supply will accomodate baby's needs. However, when mom is pumping part-time or full-time, pumping output can become...

Funnily enough this didn’t occur to me but will do this, thank you and yes I can drop one of the bottle feeds.

Having read this article I see that I could have an oversupply. I’ll drop to the one pump per day and see how that goes. Thank you for the article, it’s really helpful.
