MAM teats & bottles

Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice.

My little boy has been on MAM size 2 teats since he was about 6 weeks old as he kept falling asleep during feeds.

He has been doing well on them in the last few weeks but has started to get tired at the end of the feed so the last 1.5oz takes ages, if he takes it. Sometimes he dribbles, sometimes he doesn't.

I've tried him on a size 3 and he started really well but started dribbling milk out the sides on the teat so we changed back.

I've heard the cross cut teats are better than size 3 but aren't recommended until 6 months.

Has anyone used the cross cut ones rather than size 3 at a young age and got on with them?

My gut feeling is that he could probably do with moving up one but I just think the 3's will be too fast.

The crosscut ones are really fast and you’d usually only use them under 6 months if you’re using a milk thickener like carobel for reflux. Sucking is soothing for them and it’s normal for them to feed to sleep when very young, I wouldn’t worry too much about that. How old is he and do you have any reason to think he’s not feeding enough? Is it possible that the 2s are the best fit and if he doesn’t drink the last ounce because he doesn’t need it? I remember there’s such a difference between the mam 2s and the 3s though! Some avent teats fit the mam bottles so for a bit we used variflow size 3 avent teats. They were 3+ months I think and definitely slower than the mam 3s so seemed to be a good middle ground.

He will be 16 week on Monday and weighs just over 15lb. He sleeps through the night so has 5 bottles every 3 hours that are just under 8oz. He usually finishes all his bottles and if he doesn't I feel like he won't have enough during the day for his weight (very anxious first time mum!).

This morning he was getting tired with about 1.5oz to go so we had a rest and a burp and then he managed to finish it but he really slows down towards the end.

In a 24 hour period they need about 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight. So weighing 15lbs and 5 feeds per day that’s 7.5 ounces per feed. So seems normal enough that sometimes he might take 8 and other times 6.5. Over the course of the day it sounds like bang on what he needs. I wouldn’t worry.
