Gaviscon Positive Stories

LB prescribed gaviscon today at OOH appointment. 4 weeks old and has screamed through and after 75% of his feeds since 2 weeks old. Changed from aptamil to HIPP organic which made a difference initially but after being inconsolable for days (fine ON surprisingly) and meeting a lot of the symptoms of silent reflux dr has prescribed infant gaviscon. Apprehensive to give it tho as seen more negative than positive reviews. Any opinions appreciated. Thanks. Would do anything to help him be less upset.

It worked lovely for us however I found the prescribed dose way too much for my LO and caused constipation and an upset tummy

I would suggest starting small and using 1/4 or up to 1/2 the recommended dose and seeing if that makes an improvement and just up it slowly if necessary so your LB only has as much as he needs to alleviate symptoms if that makes sense. I know the instructions are a bit unhelpful when they are so little and don’t take reliable amount in bottles too. It became easier when my LO was on say, 5 bottles a day. He had 1 sachet in each.

Will add HIPP organic and Aptamil really didn’t sit well with my LB. He settled lovely on goats milk formula and then I very slowly transitioned to kendamil around 8 months.

hope you find a solution! I know how awful it is when they aren’t comfortable.

My daughter is nearly 4 and has been on gaviscon since she was about 6 weeks old. At first it made her really constipated so we tried omperazole too. Our GP had us on a low-medium dose which didn't do a lot. The paediatrician put us on high dose omperazole which helped but also needed gaviscon. We accepted a stool softener at this point and the combination of the three alongside me going dairy and soya free was the begining on the end of her misery with reflux

She has particularly stubborn reflux and we ended up adding domperidone around 8 months. We were able to drop the stool softener after a few months. She is in the tiny percent of children who don't outgrow their reflux by aged 2 and is still on omperazole gaviscon and domperidone at 3y10m and still needing regular dose adjustments with weight.

Gaviscon is good but often not enough it's own and the constipation can be an problem but lactulose is quite mild and can make a difference.

Gaviscon worked wonders for us. DD1 had reflux that turned out to be developmental - pretty much disappeared overnight at 6 months and so there were no underlying allergy issues. Like @Keepsmiling2948 , the prescribed dose was way too much. I used to use half of one sachet at a time and then slowly increase as DD got bigger. No major constipation issues either - i think probably because we very slowly increased the amounts we gave her. For info, DD was combi fed (about 50/50 breast + cow & gate).

Gaviscon was brilliant for us with regular reflux from three weeks old (endless screaming and Exorcist style vomits, with weight loss). It allowed DS to keep the majority of his milk down, and massively improved the crying. The prescribed dose was a little too much when he was very tiny and did cause a bit of constipation, but I got very good at keeping things moving by belly rubs and leg cycling (and it actually helped with the terrible nappy rash he had due to constant pooing). By three months he was doing really well, with just small sick-ups after a bottle which was fine to manage with bibs and muslins (so many muslins).

He did still struggle when he had a cold - huge mucusy vomits - and when he was otherwise ill as well, the puking always really ramped up. He carried on doing a small sick after every bottle until he started walking at 14 months, at which point it cleared up. However the GP said as he was otherwise happy and weight gain was fine there was no reason to give a different medication, so we just continued with Gaviscon in every bottle until he fully weaned.

Hello, jumping on to ask for advice from those of you here who have used it successfully. We’ve (finally) worked out that 5 month old DS has silent reflux and he’s been on gaviscon a week now - it’s definitely helping him but the constipation has started and he’s really upset. I’ve got some Laxido to give him so started that yday and it’s helping a bit in that he’s actually passed something today albeit it was hard and upset him while he was doing it :( I had been giving him 2 sachets 3/4 times a day but does that sound like too much? He’s breastfed if that makes any difference.

I definitely found the amount suggested on the box was too much. I spoke to the HV and did a bit of experimentation to end up with the correct dose. I think DD ended up with half a sachet dose and i did that for 6 feeds per day.
