CMPA but seemingly happy

Warning: poo photo attached

My baby is 5 weeks and 5 days old and has dropped from the 25th percentile to the 2nd (or maybe below 😑) for weight.

My health visitor suggested he may have a lactose intolerance or CMPA (not sure if this is the same thing?)

He feeds well and has plenty of wet and dirty nappies. Hes EBF. He seems content and happy and sleeps well for his age.

She asked me about the colour and consistency of baby's stool and whether it was green and muscusy.... it's sort of greenish yellow and I think it and does have muscus.

He does have milk coming up after feeds but it doesn't seem to be loads unless I'm feeding him lying down or lay him down straight after a feed. I'm not sure if it's more than normal.

She's asked me to cut dairy and see if that helps. She suggested that he may be getting loads of milk but not absorbing everything he need's properly. She'll come out to weigh him next week and I've been referred to infant feeding.

Is it normal for CMPA to present without fussiness? Does this sound like it could be an allergy? I always thought allergy babies were really difficult but this baby is a dream compared to my first.

For further context his birth weight was 3.295kg and it's now 3.48kg.

How is feeding going more generally? What is your patter of feeding and how many poos of that size do you get a day? You have no obvious flags for cmpa .

I thought feeding was going really well! So I'm kind of stumped as to why baby isn't gaining more. I'm going to try and keep a diary of the wet and dirty nappies because I know that the HV is or is going to ask me and I'm not very good at remembering. Same with the nursing as it can vary day to day. I would say that we get lots of wet and dirty nappies - maybe at least five poos a day. Feeding during the day can be anywhere from every hour to up to three hours. Very frequent cluster feeding in the evenings. Will go for 4-5 hours for one stretch at night before feeding and then another 2.

Hi!

My DS is currently trialing Aptamil Pepti 1 for suspected CMPA. Has a rash/eczema everywhere, loose, mucous nappies and very sicky after feeds! He’s generally a very happy baby and never really cries around feeding (probably why took me a while to twig) very healthy weight and always has been, could potentially be mild CMPA!

Babies don’t have to be upset all the time even though the doctors will try to tell you otherwise!!

My baby dropped 75th centile to 25th. I would say djon mustard colour poo, mucosy. All the hiccups all day long, fed well but pooped loads.

Gave up dairy and dear god the difference. No longer crying/puking on back. Poo went to french mustard, only once every 3 days and no longer pooping at night which more normal for his age. No more hiccups unless he laughs too hard. Much more settled sleep, no longer losing weight. It was going through him too quickly and not absorbing even though lots going in. Mine is 20 weeks now.

Ah that’s great to hear! I’m praying the pepti clears his symptoms, it’s awful!!!

My baby was CMPA. She fed well, was happy as anything and didn't vomit
Her main symptoms were explosive diarrhoea poos. But she'd only go once a week if not longer and she was silent reflux
When we changed her to Aptamil Pepti1, this got much better!
I think her allergy was mild, so I don't think all babies show huge symptoms

Interesting. I saw infant feeding team on Tuesday and they seemed to think it was more likely an ineffective latch/ineffective feeding. I'm still dairy free so will see what the HV thinks on Tuesday when he gets weighed again.

We had hiccups and reflux.
huge centile drops. 70+ to under 10th
very unhappy and unsettled.

a big sign was constant mucus and permanently blocked nose also very bad cradle cap - both of these resolved almost immediately once we switched to pepti 1 but ultimately he started going backwards and then we moved to Alfamino (next stage after aptimil pepti 1)
