Cold and shivering - mastitis?

I have a 4 month old who is exclusively breastfed. I suddenly feel freezing cold and shivery. I had a big sore lump in my breast yesterday which has mostly cleared, although there is still a small lump but it is longer sore. Could this be mastitis? I haven't had it before

It could be. Do you have a thermometer? How does your boob look/feel now? Any sign of a red rash?

Yes... call 111. You'll likely need to go into hospital for antibiotics. It can lead to sepsis, it is serious. I'm sorry you're going through this.

Take 2 ibuprofen.

Last time I had mastitis I deteriorated very quickly over an afternoon, by evening I was hallucinating, my husband rang 111 who told him to give me 2 ibuprofen before making my way to the Out Of Hours GP... I was 80% better by the time I got there. I'd never have believed they could be so effective when I was feeling so horrendous, I was completely out of it.

I was still prescribed antibiotics, but you may find that 2 ibuprofen get you through the night and then you can hopefully access your normal GP tomorrow morning.

Sounds exactly like I was the first time I got it with my son at 6 days old. Didn't connect the dots until talking to my friends, waited until the next morning to ring my GP (don't do this!) when I had to go straight to hospital because my pulse was far too high and wouldn't come down. Luckily not sepsis but a very bad infection and had to be hospitalised (with my son) for a couple of days.

Have you got a pump? The midwife got me to empty breast using a pump to help with mastitis when I was breastfeeding.
It did make it better but obviously get checked.

LoreleiG · 14/04/2024 21:13

I had recurring mastitis, yes this could be mastitis. Ibuprofen is as mentioned brilliant and also you can pump and use hot water bottles or have a hot shower to relieve blockage. I never went to hospital but I did go to my GP and I was prescribed antibiotics.

ThreeEggOmlette · 14/04/2024 21:14

Sounds like it could well be.
I remember aching like the worst flu. When I pumped to try & shift it, the milk was green.

Get help ASAP OP.

I've had many many bouts of mastitis, especially with my first baby.

Guidance for treatment has changed recently and since I've started following this advice I've not needed antibiotics the last few times it's happened.

The advice from this research basically flips the traditional approach on its head but I've found it to be very effective. Especially the ice packs combined with reverse lymphatic drainage.

Hope you feel better soon. Don't hesitate to go to the dr if you're feeling worse.

Very interesting and the opposite of the advice I was given ie to keep feeding on the engorged breast. So OP ignore my advice to pump earlier!

Thanks everyone. I came down with a fever, called 111 and I saw the out of hours doctor. I've been prescribed antibiotics so fingers crossed I recover quickly
