making up formula in advance

have heard of someone making up all the days bottles in the morning & putting in the fridge, then warming them up as they're needed. is it okay to do this? i thought you had to make them as needed then chuck them away after two hours...?

i don't know the exact rules, but I used to fill all my bottles w cooled boiled water at the start of the day and add the formula as i needed it (and it's easy to carry it around in the little plastic containers). Maybe they are using the ready made formula that comes in cartons - once you've opened the carton you have to use it in quite a short timeframe so I don't think there would be anything wrong in pouring it into the bottles and leaving them in the fridge (assuming they then get used in the timeframe stated on the carton)?

Much easier to make up the bottles with cool boiled water, and add formula as needed. No need to worry about it going off, or keeping it chilled when travelling

Guidance has changed - state that formula powder is added to water no cooler than 70 deg C to reduce risk of salmonella and enterobacter Sakersakii....see threads on mumsnet.

If that's the case - how on earth does anyone manage to go out? make up the bottle in advance and set the stop watch?

could you go out with water in a thermos/vacuum flask? would that keep it at a suitable temp for killing bacteria?

if you use water from a thermos when you're out, you've got the other problem of timing - got to make it up early enough so that it's cool enough to drink when needed (need to be psychic!). Guess it would have to be small cartons.

Glad the new guidance wasn't around 6 months ago....... phew

I am in the process of training my 11mnth DS to take cold bottles . But up to now, I have carried boiling water in a thermos, and when making up the bottle, I pour out 1-2 oz and fill up with boiling water from the thermos. Perfect temp with no need to worry about timing.

Blueskythinker · 28/03/2008 18:27

Or maybe carry 2 thermos? One with boiling water, and one with ice cubes?

msappropriate · 28/03/2008 18:37

it was around 6 months ago, I think its been well over a year now.

you can have hot water in a thermos. dole out 2/3 (ish) of hot water you'll need into the bottle, add milk powder, close and shake. Hopefully you will be in or near a cafe and can ask for cold water to top up the 1/3 to cool down to drinking temp?

does that make sense?
