Infant feeding

10 month not loving solids

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on solids and breastfeeding.

My baby is now 10 months old. Started really
well on solids but I am struggling to get
him to eat consistently.

He's fantastic at eating his porridge, even if he has a cold or teething. When he’s feeling good he’s great at exploring finger food and happily accepts the spoon and gobbles up quite a lot.

However, for the last 6+ weeks he seems to have more days of refusing food than accepting. He will just seal his lips and shake his head. I thought it was due to teething (he has 6 teeth so it’s been quite intense for him) and colds. But now I am questioning whether he is having too much milk.

He is breastfed and feeds twice in the night (would love to cut it down to one) and around 4-5 times in the day. I’ve tried solids before milk, and that seems to frustrate him. Also tried solids after milk, he prefers this, but not always successful.

Any tips anyone can share please?

I would say wait for the weather to improve. He is probably asking for breast to sooth him. Then it fills him up and he is no longer hungry. That's my guess. I found both my exclusively breastfed children slept better with the arrival of decent weather.

Honestly I wouldn't worry. It all sounds pretty normal.

Wait for him to hit 12 months and then you can start some gentle night weaning.

Once he's might weaned his appetite in the day will pick up a bit naturally.

Also, is he getting plenty of exercise? I found mine were hungrier if we'd done a class, playgroup or gone swimming.

Could you try cutting out the first BF for now? My DH used to get up and take them down for breakfast at this age rather than having a BF first.
