URGENT ADVICE NEEDED

susiemj · 28/03/2008 08:52

Hi,

I´m curretnly on holiday abroad with my 12 week old dd. My DH has pneumonia and I have bronchitis that might turn into pneumonia. I have been put on antiobiotics and told not to breastfeed until they are finished. This will be five days.

Will my milk supply dry up? I have a pump and have taken milk every 4 hours, but I don´t think the pump is very effective.

ADVICE PLEASE!
p.s. I may not be able to respond to messages - this interet connection is not very certain!

bumping this for you. Although I fed whilst on ab

cockles · 28/03/2008 08:58

ARE YOU SURE you can't breastfeed? Lots of antibiotics are ok with breastfeeding.
RIng the breastfeeding netwrok drug info line
0844 412 4665
Or check their site on medications
www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/Antibiotics-and-Breastfeeding.pdf
Can't paste that page but it has a list of ok antibs incl amoxycillin.

cmotdibbler · 28/03/2008 08:58

Do you know what antibiotics they are ? Most drs aren't very good on what you can bf with, so its worth double checking - you can do this at BFN antibiotic info

You probably need to be pumping every 3 hours, and if you aren't getting much, try hand expressing. But it would be best all round if you can still bf.

fletchaaarr · 28/03/2008 08:59

this has a list of ABs safe to take when bf

fletchaaarr · 28/03/2008 08:59

ah x post - we all gave the same link though

susiemj · 28/03/2008 09:02

Im in a bit of a difficult situation in regards to my in-laws. One of them is the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics. I think it would be very difficult to justify feeding her to them.

Basically almost everything is ok, even those that they used to think affected teeth. Nothing on that list is actually contraindicated. It sounds like you have had duff info from the dr, so please don't stop.

determination · 28/03/2008 09:05

Hi susie,
If you cant bfed with the antibiotics you are taking - PLEASE check the links provided, ensure that you continue to pump or hand express to keep up with the stimulation, also still have loads of skin to skin. What age is your baby?

Hope you and your dh recover soon.

susiemj · 28/03/2008 09:06

She is 12 weeks

Susie, please remember (even though its your FIL or MIL) that the majority of Drs are not educated enough on breastfeeding, so you may well know more that them on the subject!

berolina · 28/03/2008 09:07

Where are you?

cmotdibbler · 28/03/2008 09:07

But unless they checked very up to date info on the antibs, most Drs would admit to not knowing everything about drugs and breastfeeding. Show them the info and say something like 'I was just checking that my supply would be OK, and I was pointed to the latest data on antibs and bf. Have you seen it ?'. Its your baby and body, and giving your baby your antibodies to whatever you and DH have been infected with is particularly critical right now.

soremummy · 28/03/2008 09:09

Im sorry but if the tablets are on the list then I would still bf regardless of my inlaws. Are you staying with them? Will they know if you do feed?

determination · 28/03/2008 09:09

Also it would be beneficial to actually give your baby any immunity to the infection that you have too.. I personally would continue to bfed.

susiemj · 28/03/2008 10:54

I can´t find the antibiotic on the list. It may have a different name in Spain (which is where I am).

I am in my in-laws´ house. They would definitely know.

susie - it is really, really important that you continue to breastfeed. If necessary get the a/bs changed, but bear in mind your milk will not pass on infection, but antibodies to the same bug you are suffering from. Your daughter is at risk if you do not continue to breastfeed - it's as bald a choice as that, and a bit of embarrasment and awkwardness and hurt pride on the part of the inlaws may be (you may feel) less important than this.

Show the internet info to the doctor in-law.

Good luck.

tiktok · 28/03/2008 10:59

Susie, read the name of the active ingredient on the pack and then do a search for its brand name. Then search the other sources to match it.

Or another good site is ToxNet

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT

written by medics and pharmacologists and well-referenced, and you may be able to search on the Spanish name.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 28/03/2008 11:00

can you write the name of the antibiotic on here? there may be two, the brand name and in smaller lettering but still quite obvious on the label should be the scientific name.

for example: Keflex is a brand name and Cephalexin the scientific name.

determination · 28/03/2008 21:17

Hows it going Susie?

susiemj · 03/04/2008 09:21

sorry not to reply before - computer kaput.

thanks for advice. Tik tok - found the medecine there. It was fine.

we´re back on the breast and all is well.

thanks again. bloody doctors!

Glad it got sorted, susie....I think it is scandalous when doctors tell mothers to stop breastfeeding when a quick search would reveal other options (er, like not stopping).

susiemj · 03/04/2008 11:35

Fortunately she went back to it like a little glutton!
