Green poo, foamy? please help no hindmilk?

My 8 week old I'm exclusively breastfeeding had yellow normal poos up until 4 days ago when they turned a little greeny, then fully green then back to yellow and green. I just noticed some foam in the nappy green. I'm worried about having no hindmilk? I pump one session a day for dh to give a bottle to baby. Noticed not as much 'gold top' fat as I was getting before. Weight gain is good as of Friday still gaining. Milk looks watery when I hand express. Has anyone had the same issue? Thankyou in advance

Whenever I was worried about my milk I made sure to eat plenty of protein and good fats.

There aren't different types of milk it's just that the fatty bits take longer to come through.

How long are younpukping for each time/hownokng is your LO feeding for each time? Are you doing breast compressions?

Yes I had the same issue and took a nappy to the gp and got ds checked out as it went on a long time. GP said look at him, he'd thriving, no need to do anything ( he didn't even look at the nappy lol). It was great reassurance and a great yardstick. If your dc is gaining, alert, happy etc it is likely to be absolutely fine. The hind milk isn't seen as much of an issue either anymore.

Thank you so much for replying so quick? @PoppingTomorrow he has a good feed 30 mins usually and I do compressions too.
@mikado1 thank you this is reassuring I was at the gp Friday for a his checks and she was very happy and he did a green poo while we was there the gp didn't seem concerned. But the foam just worried me. He is a very happy baby and gaining as he should. Nothing else wrong.
@Geebray you have a point, diet not been great today going to eat lots of protein for dinner
Thankyou all x

This can be really common as a random event during feeding! Sometimes it happens when they're cluster feeding, or have had a wee bug of some kind.
If they're otherwise well and there aren't any concerns, it's nothing to worry about.

Foremilk and hindmilk is a really overstated concept - there are differences in composition at the beginning and end of a feed, but we don't need to actively manage it, because our babies will do it for us: fussing to change sides or zonking out!

Green used to mean teething for Dts.

Green is part of normal - it’s milk that has been digested more quickly so this can mean it’s lower in fat or that a lot of drool has gone down too or that baby has a virus etc. The virus can knock the gut bacteria so it takes a bit to come back to normal.

Nothing you eat will make any real difference presuming you are averagely well nourished. Your milk is made from your blood so higher protein food won’t make a difference.

Breast compressions aren’t necessary for a thriving baby who feeds well. Your baby ticks these boxes so unless there are any other problems it’s just something you will see from time to time. Baby poo is pretty expressive really!

@RockCrushesLizard @Passthepickle @idontlikealdi thank you all so much. I feel so much better. He's absolutely fine nothing else I am worried about. Really grateful for your replies. I'm a bit crazy, first time mum via ivf, took 6 years for this little miracle to come so I'm constantly analysing everything. Hope you all have a lovely rest of your evening x

My first used to get green poo and after a long time we worked out it was whenever I ate garlic. It can also be a sign of trapped wind/teething. Maybe keep a food diary for a bit and see if any patterns emerge?

If it's regularly green and foamy it means that the milk is travelling too fast through the gut and the gut is irritated. For us it was a sure sign of allergy and if you peered at the nappies (what fun it is to be a parent!) you would see small pin pricks of blood. It was egg, dairy and oat allergy for us.

Hi OP,

please don’t panic. Green poo and even foamy green poo is not usually a problem for breastfed babies. Basically if baby is otherwise thriving (gaining weight as expected, doing plenty of wet and dirty nappies every day, generally happy etc) then it’s almost certainly fine.

Foamy green poo is a sign of lactulose overload which is usually just a temporary thing but may be worth speaking to a BFC or IBCLC. You can also give the National Breastfeeding Helpline a ring!

you can read about it and all the other causes of green pop here https://breastfeeding.support/why-is-my-babys-poop-green/

note the quote by Dr Jack Newman:
If the baby is content, gaining well and drinking well and the only problem is that the baby has green bowel movements, the mother should wear sunglasses so she can’t tell what colour they are and stop worrying about green bowel movements.”

Why is My Baby’s Poop Green?

The usual colour of a breastfed baby’s poo is mustard or yellow. Plenty of soft yellow poop after day five of

Super quote from JN, as usual. My dc poo was like that as an ongoing thing... there was no problems at all. I believed the doc that one time and never thought about it again.

Aw OP it’s overwhelming all that love and care - not crazy at all. I became an ibclc after becoming obsessed with the minutia of feeding babies!
