sterilising small items- milton

my prem dd needs to have vits 3 times a day and now I'm exclusively bfing no need for all the expressing bits to be sterilised just three syringes.

I have been using milton cold water to sterilise but no longer need 5litre sterilising unit.

I had been buying the tablets but the other day bought the milton liquid thinking i could do a small sterilise. However instructions are 2 half caps perv 5 litres.

Is there any reason why it's 5 litres? and what do you reckon would be a safe amount to use in a small tupperware tub - prob half litre size? just split it down to rougly 8th of a cap? - just doesn't seem that much

Most SCBU's nowadays advise that you just wash in very hot soapy water and leave to air dry

I used to use a small tupperware tube.

I worked out what volume the tub held...and how much I needed to add in ml. I then aquired a standard syringe from work (you could buy a 5ml oral syringe from chemist for about 50p) and then used that to measure the milton.

Just be sure your stuff is submerged (I used a round tub and a suacer which was a perfect fit as a weight).

just work out the ratios for a smaller tub. I do mine in a small tupperwear type and put half a cap in

Alternatively you could use a travel microwave steriliser (the baxa syringes are steam steriliser safe - but not the bungs which go in the bottle, but you don't need the bung until you get down to teh dregs).

OR you could pop your syringes in a mug and poor boiling water over them and let them stand in teh boiling water for 5 mins and use straight away. That should kill most nasties.
