Hi All, need advice.

My DD is 4wks old, and a couple of days back she starting passing a lot more wind. Before she passes wind, she seems to be in a lot of pain, waking up stream and/or crying. I am worried because she seems to be in lots of pain. Any advice on this would be helpful. She is feeding well and pooing regularly. Thanks

This is normal IME, or at least not unusual. She is probably finding the trapped wind painful.

However you could probably help her by minimising how much air she takes in, or getting more out straight after feeds? Ie, check latch (if bfing) so she doesn't take on too much air when drinking, and take some time to wind her well after feeding.

This is a good winding resource:

And this is about colic, but has lots of suggestions about trapped wind too:

Dont know about this so bumping for you!

I used Infacol but found it gave DD terrible diarrhea so switched to Colief which has an erratic effect on the symptoms. Found that sitting with DD in a semi upright position is best so she can get some rest. Warm water sometimes helps but 'bicycles' with her legs is more successful.

I used chamomile tea for my Ds's colic. I made up one tea bag in a pint of boiling water and left it to cool on the side. Discarded the bag when just warm. I then put the jug of tea in the fridge and from it half filled a bottle with tea and topped it up with boiling water. When right temp fed Ds with it and it sorted his colic out really well. It's natural and cheap.
If they don't like the taste, add a tiny bit of brown sugar to it when making the tea up - say a teaspoon to a pint. Worked for us!

Ds did this a lot, was on infacol for quite a while, off it and ok now. bicicling legs defo works, also lightly rubbing belly clockwise

Hi Zany, sounds like she could be constipated. DS2 has had wind and colic issues since birth (now 16 weeks), and he tends to cry before farting when constipated. Giving him teaspoons of boiled water (slightly warmer than room temp) help with this and we also use Omega 3 and 6 eye-q capsules in 2 of his feeds a day on the recommendation of our chiropractor which help regulate his poos. She says that as long as the poo is no thicker than toothpaste consistancy then they are not constipated (sorry if tmi!) - it doesn't matter how often they go. Good winding also helps get it out of both ends - you need to persevere though; we sometimes wind DS for 20 minutes and are about to give up then he does a massive burp/fart or both . Would recommend seeing a chiropractor if someone could recommend one in your area - try to see one who specialises in babies and children. HTH

Poor thing- my son is also a slave to wind!

Have you ever had trapped wind? Its bloody painful!! Unfortunately a baby's only way of expressing that pain is to scream, go red and draw their legs up until the wind moves itself.

Make sure baby is well burped several times during a feed and afterwards. If BFing, check the latch and maybe feed in a more upright position. If bottle feeding, check they aren't swallowing too much air or gulping the feed down.

When bay is windy and uncomfortable, holding them in the tiger in the tree position helps soothe the pain and bring the wind up!

Bewilderbeast · 30/03/2008 16:09

we found that sitting ds in a vibrating chair after feeds really helped with this

Thanks for all your suggestions. Have started to give her some warm water and taking more time to burb her throughly which she hates as she loves to sleep after a feed Still no poo, will keep at it, will probably stop giving her infacol. On the plus side she is BF'ing well and doing plenty of wet nappies. Cant believe that her 'poo' seems to be the main point of conversation in our household right now
