Mine had peanut butter on toast relatively early on, some time between 6-8 months (baby lead weaning, cut into fingers). I'd also eaten nuts throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding, and most likely touched them with peanutty fingers at some point, so was relatively sure there wouldn't be a reaction.

Inyourwildestdreams · 24/02/2024 16:01

We introduced it relatively soon - 6-8ish months I think. I think after dairy and egg it was the next allergen I introduced.

We stirred a small amount into porridge when really young 😊

Advice now is earlier. Introduce nuts one at a time in case of reaction, so you know which one if there are issues.

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/02/2024 16:08

Do you have allergies in the family?

If yes seek medical advice.

If no then crack on from 6 months.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 24/02/2024 16:14

DH has peanut allergy and we were told by the allergy clinic to try the children before they were a year old as they're more likely to react badly after that. However, they didn't tell us until the children were older and we'd missed the boat. Confused

I think the current advice is to introduce early, and to give fairly frequently? We did peanut butter on toast, in porridge etc from early on.

You might find the decision about purées or baby led is made by the baby! My first was fairly relaxed about being spoon fed on occasion but my second has always refused to be fed and wants to do it all himself - we did mostly baby led with number one and exclusively with number two (despite wanting to do a little bit of spoon feeding). Baby led is lovely and easy as you can just give them the baby friendly bits of what you eat, but I think they do usually take a bit longer to eat a good amount.

Advice is early. No nuts, nut butters or milled nuts in yogurt. Both my kids hated BLW and ate lots more with purées and IMO you cN make that healthier too and get them into veg much easier. I started with veg puree and only slowly introduced fruits and other food (Annabel Karmel method). You don’t want a kid who only likes meat and pasta.

Not in yoghurt ?
I plan on maybe starting her on some purées working up to some finger foods ..
I don’t think there’s any family history of nut allergies it’s just so scary weaning them 🫠

I don't have a family history of peanut allergies but...

I gave my DD peanut butter for the first time in the hospital car park, just in case Blush

I was NEVER this OTT about her big brother. I seem to have got more daft as I've got slightly older

The guidance is to give from 6 months +. And speak to GP/allergy clinic if there's a family history before trying

Rubyrubyrubyruby123 · 24/02/2024 19:40

I recommend the book “how to wean your baby”

I seen so many people doing this and I had it in my head to do it too.🤣 but apparently babies don’t have reactions first exposure , think I read that somewhere anyway ?

My kids have a milled nuts and seed mix with yogurth. For example yum and yay brand at Sainsburys. It’s not peanuts, other nuts. My youngest is too small to chew nuts that’s why I buy them milled.

Kindly, why don't you ask a professional and see what the current guidelines are. On here you'll just get a bunch of random answers, including I fed my one month a steak everyday and they turned out fine

Bomblesofbimbledon · 24/02/2024 22:01

I gave mine peanut butter on toast early on. Definitely by 7 or 8 months. I mixed the peanut butter with breastmilk for a while so it wasn't too claggy. He eats a lot of peanut butter sandwiches now.

Although I'm only realising now that I don't think he's ever had any other kind of nuts 🤔 I suppose hazelnuts in the form of chocolate spread. And he's had an almond croissant before 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s why I give milled nuts, they include almonds and walnuts. You can also give toast with almond butter.

Why not in yoghurts? Mine love peanut butter swirled into yoghurt.

BeauSignoles · 25/02/2024 07:45

Giving your baby their first peanut in the hospital carpark is pointless because for an allergic reaction to happen your body needs the antibodies to react against. So an allergic reaction will happen on the second, third or even 100th time you eat peanuts.

I meant I don’t give actual nuts (my youngest can’t chew them yet) I mix milled nuts in yogurth and give nut butters.

Oh right as you said no nut butters. I was thinking that’s definitely ok to have in yoghurt!

Sonora25 · 25/02/2024 08:48

@Peppapog263 yes I see why it looks confusing. I can’t edit anymore unfortunately. Nut butter in yogurt or porridge is also nice and works well.

LoftyTurtle · 28/02/2024 21:33

If there's no family history of allergies then most good research out there says early introduction is best. Delaying introduction of food allergens makes allergies more likely. Babies immune systems do a lot of developing around ~6 months so they need to figure out that for eg peanuts are safe and not dangerous. Whereas if they never see a peanut until they're 3 years old, their immune system is more likely to go "What the hell is that?!?!"

LoftyTurtle · 28/02/2024 21:34

We smeared smooth peanut butter on DD tongue and also in porridge and on toast - i wouldn't use crunchy though as could be a choking risk
